The Good: The Aggies led the SEC in rushing, passing and total offense last year. The Triple Crown was spearheaded by Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, who became the first freshman to win the trophy. Beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa made a statement that A&M would be able to play with anyone in the conference.
The Bad: The defense has to be better than last year. The once proud Wrecking Crew ranked seventh in scoring and rushing, last in passing and ninth in total defense. If it were not for the high powered offense, the Aggies might have been in big trouble.
The Ugly: Reveille's boys blew a 10 point halftime lead to Florida and a 12 point lead late in the second quarter to LSU, both at home, which were the only two losses of 2012. This has been a disturbing trend that dates back to 2011 when A&M led at the half five times, but did not win any of those games. Once they figure out the games are 60 minutes instead of 30, they could be national title contenders.
Starters Returning: 6 – Offense/5 - Defense.
Schedule: Things line up perfect for the Aggies. Six of the first eight games are at home, and the two road games are at rebuilding Arkansas and improving Ole Miss. However, the one home game that should determine who wins the SEC West, and possibly the SEC and the National Championship will be on September 14th as Alabama comes to town to avenge last year's loss. Winner of that one should have the inside track to winning the West. It should be smooth sailing the rest of the way until a November 23rd trip to Baton Rouge.
Outlook: Head Coach Kevin Sumlin had an impressive first year in the SEC
and has gone 46-19 overall so he knows what he is doing. With
fantastic sophomore Johnny Manziel leading a high powered offense, they
will put up some points to cover for an inexperienced defense. But it
is the defense, and the fact A&M will not be able to sneak up on
anyone like last year, that will be the challenge that will prove to be
too much for them to overcome. They will be good, but fall just short
of the division championship.
Prediction: 2nd SEC West.
