The Good: Butch Jones has revived a morbid program and has the Vols primed for a comeback to the elite of the conference. Helping matters is having a veteran offensive line that is littered with future NFL players. Losing Tyler Bray was one of the best things that has happened to the Vols in years.
The Bad: All impact positions will feature new starters. The QB, RB and all WR positions are up for grabs and that has to be an unsettling situation as 2013 begins.
The Ugly: Naked pictures of Bea Arthur could not compare to what the defense looked like last year. The Vols ranked next to last in the SEC in rushing and passing, and dead last in scoring (35 points a game) and total defense (471 yards per game). New defensive coordinator John Jancek got rid of the 3-4 and has returned the Big Orange to their old 4-3 in hopes of improvement. That shouldn't be too hard.
Starters Returning: 5- Offense/ 7 - Defense.
Schedule: Not what a rebuilding team wants to see as they take trips to Oregon, Florida (Back to back weeks) and Alabama. The Vols should be 3-2 going into October, but it will be an October that will be more of a trick than a treat as Georgia and South Carolina come to Knoxville and a road trip to Alabama will close out the month. If they can withstand the blow, November features four very winnable games.
Outlook: Butch Jones has the Vols headed in the right direction after the
failed Derek Dooley regime. There is a new attitude among the players
and coaches, the recruiting is back to where it needs to be, and the
ball is due to bounce their way after it has gone against them the last
three years. The key is the home date with Vanderbilt on November
23rd. Win that game, and seven wins is a realistic possibility, as well
as reestablishing themselves as the best team in Tennessee and a team
to look out for in 2014.
Prediction: 4th SEC East.
