2008-2009 ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS WOMENS BASKETBALL

Looking for our current Arkansas Razorbacks Womens Basketball page? Check out 2010-2011 Arkansas Razorbacks Womens Basketball.

Looking at the University of Arkansas women's basketball team's record the past two season - you can really see the dramatic difference between competition in the SEC vs competition elsewhere.

Over the past two year, the Lady Backs have run up a 30-2 record against non-conference opponents; but only 5-24 in the SEC. Amazing!

For the upcoming 2008 - 2009 season, the UA Lady Razorbacks get six players back from last year's team and also welcomes six newcomers. The Arkansas lady's head coach Tom Collens of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks womens basketball team will hit the courts at Bud Walton Arena to start their 33rd season this year. The Lady Backs have been to the AIAW and NCAA tournaments 17 times, and made one final four appearance in 1998.

Although it has been several years since the team has made any big noise in women's college basketball, the ladies are hoping to make a change under the direction of head coach Tom Collen who will start his second season with the team.

The Lady Backs had a decent 2006-2007 season with a 18-12 record. They were fifth in the SEC-West and seventh in the SEC overall, keeping them in the middle of the pack. The team was able to make it to the SEC Tournament but lost to Kentucky in the first round 72-57. They had some challenges with coaching changes and injuries that held them back from playing big in post-season tournaments.

After suffering from several injuries of top players last season the Lady Backs are working hard to make a comeback. Laurin Ervin, who was JUCO All-American in 2006, is returning to the Lady Backs for her final season as point guard.

Brittany Vaughn also did well in the NCAA rankings being placed #17 in assists per game. She will also return for her senior year as guard. Sarah Pfeifer will return to the team for her fifth year after being granted permission to play as a graduate student. Tanisha Smith is expected to bring her skills to the team this season after joining the team last year.

Danielle Allen will return for her senior year with the Lady Backs after sitting out most of last season with a plethora of injuries. With the abundance of returning talent the Lady Backs should do better this season than last, although they will have to pull off some upsets against fellow SEC teams and do well on the road if they want to place higher in their conference.

The ladies of Arkansas took their skills to Canada recently where they played in the 2007 Canada tour at the University of British Columbia. Both Pfeifer and Ayana Brereton did well scoring double digits and leading their team to victory 69-42. Ervin made big numbers in the NCAA ranking, placing #17 in field goal percentage, #20 in rebounds per game, and #21 in rebounds per game.

The Arkansas women's basketball support staff has found two new members in Jake and Angie Nelp, who are coming to help shape up the team and bring their coaching and playing expertise to the players. The Lady Backs will kick off their 2007-2008 season on November 4 when they play Missouri Southern at home.
