Ole Miss Rebels basketball enters the 2008-9 season looking to capitalize on a very strong 2007-8 season in which the team was a force both inside the SEC as well as nationally. And while the team will have to accommodate for the loss of two of its starters from last year's squad, the Rebels seem on the surface to have enough depth, when considering returning talent as well as some of the incoming youngsters, to make up for those departures.

Fortunately for Ole Miss, the team does have a number of players returning who at one point or another last season were key offensive contributors. Sophomore Chris Warren, last year's leading scorer at 15.8 ppg, will be relied upon heavily when it comes to offense, and look for his ppg number to rise. However, for Old Miss to succeed, junior guards Eniel Polynice and David Huertas, who each averaged 10.7 ppg last season, will have to step up their games. Polynice, who leads among the returning players in rpg (5.3) in particular will be looked upon to provide some of the inside presence being lost.
Ole Miss also has the benefit of a good recruiting class coming which, while not consisting of a single sure fire star, boasts a number of players who should contribute, and provide solid depth to the Rebs' roster. Highlighted among these incoming players are JUCO transfer DeAundre Cranston, Murphy Holloway, and big man Terrance Henry, a player whose development will be watched very closely by coaches. Henry may have the quickest path to the floor, again, given the losses in the paint.
Ole Miss definitely has some holes to fill entering the 2008-9 season. And while its losses are significant, the Rebels appear to be a program that has grown to a place where it is now able to compensate for these losses through good recruiting classes and depth in the returning roster. Its ascent within the SEC ranks looks likely to continue, although the program is clearly a step behind the elite teams of the SEC East.
