2011 - 2012 South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball Preview

The South Carolina Gamecocks look to finish toward the bottom of the SEC this season, and that has more to do with how good some other teams look than how bad the Gamecocks themselves come off as. It also doesn't help that they play in one of the deepest divisions in the nation in the SEC East. With teams like Florida and Kentucky on the schedule not just once, but twice, South Carolina looks to be in for an extremely rough season.

The good news for South Carolina is that head coach Darrin Horn has hit the recruiting trail extremely hard, and it is slowly paying off. The main problem is that the fans are getting restless, and the administration may not wait for these new recruits to make it to campus before getting rid of Horn with the way the past couple seasons have gone. This would be a shame for the Gamecocks, as he really is a great coach that is getting the most out of what he has to work with.

Players such as Ramon Galloway and Sam Muldrow will be key factors in the success of the Gamecocks this season. They should provide the team with game breaking abilities that will definitely be needed for them to stay in some games. Their supporting cast should be pretty good as well. This will make South Carolina one of those teams that no one wants to play, no matter what their record represents them as. I wouldn't be surprised if most teams dread playing them even if they have a horrible conference record.

This team is built to be a scrappy team that could play the role of spoiler in the latter part of the season. It wouldn't surprise me if they entered the SEC Tournament as the 6th seed from the East, and knocked out whoever was representing the West as the number 3 seed in the first round. This team definitely looks like a team that could ruin someone's parade toward the end of the season.
