Ole Miss Basketball History

Ole Miss basketball history begins with the 1908-1909 season, when the team went 1-4. From those relatively meager beginnings, the Ole Miss basketball program went on to experience varying levels of success depending on the period in which we are referring.

For example, during the 1920's, Ole Miss was one of the best teams in the nation. During that decade, Ole Miss compiled a record of 111-64 (which came out to a winning percentage of .634). Ole Miss also experienced significant success during the decade of the 1910s (51-43, .543), the 1930s (108-99, .522), and most recently, the years since the turn of the century (102-82, .554).

Ole Miss, unfortunately, has also experienced some decades in which they were not quite as successful, or particular note, the 1940s (70-118, .372), the 1960s (88-153, .365), and the 1970s (116-150, .436).

Ole Miss played independently in its early years before eventually joining the Southern Conference, the league in which many current schools currently in the Southeastern Conference originally were aligned with. After a number of relatively successful years in the Southern Conference, the University of Mississippi became one of the founding members of the Southeastern Conference during the 1932-1933 season. During that debut season, Ole Miss went 5-7 in the Southeastern Conference and 6-12 overall.

The University of Mississippi Rebels have been somewhat limited in all time post season play, although Ole Miss has been participating in the postseason more in recent years. Entering the 1997 season, Ole Miss had only appeared in one NCAA Tournament (that coming in 1981). However, beginning in 1997, the Rebels went on a 6 year run in which the team made 5 NCAA Tournaments, the highlight of that being the 2001 season in which the team made a run all the way to the Sweet Sixteen.

Ole Miss basketball has seen a number of eventual NBA players on its court. These players include Cob Jarvis, who was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1954 and played for 7 years with the team, Carlos Clark, who was a member of the Boston Celtics 1984 World Championship team, Elston Turner, who was drafted by Dallas in 1982 and who has had a lengthy career as a player and coach in the NBA.

The University of Mississippi Men's basketball team plays its home games at the C.M. Smith Coliseum, (originally known as Rebel Coliseum), or which is affectionately referred to by Ole Miss fans, the "Tad Pad". The C.M. Smith Coliseum is named after former athlete, coach, and Athletic Director C.M. Smith. The Coliseum's relatively small maximum capacity (considered to be approximately 8,700) has resulted in the C.M Smith Coliseum being known to be one of the most intimidating places in the Southeastern Conference, and quite possibly the country, to play.
