2011 - 2012 Auburn Tigers Basketball Preview

I look for the Auburn Tigers to be the SEC's cellar team this season. I do think, however, that they will be a great team in years to come with their new head coach Tony Barbee at the helm. If there ever was a team that could go from pretender to contender in one year, it would be the Tigers.

Barbee has accomplished what no other coach has ever accomplished at Auburn: he has boosted the interest of the Auburn fans. The fans are actually excited for the start of the basketball season, even though they look to be disappointed this season. Next season should be a different story, though. If the Tigers can get some of their players experience this season, then they could become game breakers nest year.

Auburn's largest problem is a lack of depth at key positions. Unlike baseball and football, you really need more than just your starters if you expect to compete, and the Tigers just do not have that this season. Most of their best players on the depth chart have never played in a college game, or are transferring in and still need to learn the schemes that the coaches like to run. This, coupled with have a brand new head coach, tells me that they just are not at the level of competing for a championship yet.

If Barbee can keep on the recruiting trail, he should be able to put together a team that could rival the one Arkansas looks to be putting together for next year. While I do think the West is wide open this season, the other SEC teams ahead of Auburn just have so much more experience that it is tough to see them sustaining any king of momentum. This doe not mean that they will not be able to pull a few upsets they just probably will not be able to string together any winning streaks.

This Auburn team is another team that I would watch out for come tournament time, due to their players having gained some experience and some team chemistry by that point. There is always one team that shocks everyone and makes a deep run in the SEC, and I think this may just be that team if they can stay healthy. I still think they will finish in the cellar in the regular season, but there have been some odd things happen in the post season the past few years.
