2011 - 2012 Albama Crimson Tide Basketball Preview
SEC Sports Fan is predicting that Alabama will end the season in third place in the SEC (and receive an NCAA basketball tournament bid). You can read more about that at our 2011 - 2012 Southeastern Conference Basketball Predictions and Preview.

BAMA B-ball had a very strong year. In fact they made it to the finals of the NIT, before losing to Wichita State.
The Alabama Crimson Tide looks to be right in the middle of the pack in the SEC West this season (ooops, wrong about that; Alabama ended up #1 in the West, of course the West was weak). They do not seem to have any major new players coming in that could help them right now and the older players on their roster have not been the most consistent bunch under pressure. Anthony Grant looks to have another decent year this year, but I doubt they will compete for any championships.
The shining point of this Alabama team last season was their tremendous defense. They ranked first in the SEC last season, and they will need a repeat performance this year to have any hope of competing against teams from the SEC East come later in the year.
The good news for Alabama is that they play in the SEC West, which does not really have a dominant team outside of Mississippi State this season. All of the teams have question marks surrounding them, and so the Crimson Tide could potentially finish the season with a winning conference record if the chips fell right. Even finishing 2nd in the West is not out of reach this season, and with Mississippi State's habit of not playing up to their talent level, Alabama could make a push for that top slot. I seriously doubt that will happen, but it is a possibility with how wide open the West is.
JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell are two of Alabama's three leading scorers last year, averaging 14.1 and 9.2 points respectively, and Alabama returns both of them this season. They will have to be more constant than they were last season, but if they can pull it together, then they could lead the Tide to a surprising season. If Alabama can come up with some depth and these two can get a little help elsewhere on the court, I wouldn't count the Tide out of making a move in the West this season.
