Georgia Bulldogs Basketball History
The University of Georgia has long prided itself on its sports tradition. However, much like some of the other Southeastern Conference schools, the Bulldog football program tends to overshadow the men's basketball squad. And given the historical success of the football program, to an extent, this is understandable. However, it should be noted that the University of Georgia basketball program has its own share of historical accomplishments to consider.
The University of Georgia Men's Basketball program has been in existence for 102 years and during that period of time has been so stranger to success. Over those years, the team has amassed a record of 1,143-1,050, a record of 93 games over .500 and a winning percentage of .521.
Following the 1932 season, the University of Georgia Men's basketball team became a founding member of the newly created Southeastern Conference, leaving a legacy of success in the Southern Conference behind.
The most prolific era of Bulldog men's basketball has most assuredly been the last 20 to 30 years, in which Head Coaches Hugh Durham and Orlando “Tubby” Smith led the team to heights never before attained.
And as of this writing, that impressive run has continued, with the Georgia bulldogs being rewarded with postseason tournament invitations of one kind or another in 18 of the past 22 seasons.
However, among all of these great seasons, the pinnacle of success for the Georgia Bulldogs basketball team came in 1983, in the school's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
In 1983, a mere appearance in the NCAA Tournament was more than satisfying enough for most Bulldogs fans. But the University of Georgia basketball team had different ideas in mind. Despite a brutal schedule that included games vs. perennial powers such as St. John's and the University of North Carolina, the Bulldogs managed to advance all the way to the NCAA Final Four, joining N.C. State, Houston, and Louisville.
Other notable former Bulldogs include Vern Fleming and Willie Anderson.
