Mississippi State Bulldogs Basketball History
The Mississippi State basketball program came into existence in the 1908-1909 season, during which the team went 5-5 under then coach T.H. Werner (an odd record considering the team began that season with 5 straight victories).
Soon after, Mississippi State basketball became successful, due in large measure to the leadership of coach E.C. Hayes, whose all time winning percentage of .697 currently stands number one all time in the history of the program.
Shortly thereafter, the Bulldogs moved on to the newly created Southern Conference where Mississippi State was traditionally at or near the top of the standings. Over time, the Bulldogs won 4 Southern Conference titles.
In 1932, Mississippi State became one of the founding members of the Southeastern Conference. At least in basketball, MSU has been highly competitive in the SEC.
All told, the Mississippi State Bulldogs have won 6 Southeastern Conference regular season championships (coming in 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1991, and 2004), as well as 2 SEC Tournament championships (in 1996 and 2002).
Additionally, MSU has garnered 8 entries to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (in 1963, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003. 2004 and 2005) and 5 additional entries into the NIT postseason tournament (in 1974, 1990, 1999, 2001, and 2007).
The finest moment in the history of the Mississippi State Bulldogs basketball program was probably the 1995-1996 season. During this season, MSU made the NCAA Final Four, eventually losing to National runner-up Syracuse.
This impressive tournament showing came on the heels of a strong showing in the regular season, particularly within the Southeastern Conference. During that season, the Bulldogs won their second straight SEC Western Division title as well as won the SEC Tournament Championship (their first ever) defeating perennial power University of Kentucky in the process.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs play their home games in the Humphrey Coliseum, which opened originally in 1975. This 11,000 seat basketball arena is the largest in the state, and following an extensive round of renovations in recent years, stands as one of the finest multi-use athletic facilities in the Southeastern Conference.
The Mississippi State University basketball program is currently coached by Rick Stansbury, who has coached the squad since 1999. His 185 career wins are the 2nd most ever at Mississippi State, trailing only Richard Williams, who coached the squad from 1987-1998, and had 191 career victories.
Mississippi State University basketball boasts a number of current and former NBA players of note. Among these are Bailey Howell, the only former Bulldog in the National Basketball Hall of Fame, Jeff Malone, Erick Dampier (a member of the 1995-1996 NCAA Final Four squad), and Dontae' Jones.
