2008 Georgia Basketball

If you are looking for information about this year's team, go to
Current Georgia Bulldogs Basketball Information.

AMAZING -- SEC B-ball Tournament Championship for Georgia Basketball. The Bulldogs survived tornadoes, delays, postponements, and even an unprecedented basketball "double header" to win it all in Atlanta. And, the Dawgs had no easy games--beating Ole Miss, Kentucky, Mississippi State and, of course, Arkansas.

Now it's off to Washington D.C. as a 12 seed to play Xavier on Thursday. Go Dogs!!

Prior Discussion:

University of Georgia Bulldogs basketball has never achieved the lofty heights that Bulldog football has. However, it has had some good years. Notably, UGA's basketball team made it to March Madness' "Final Four" in 1983. And, Georgia basketball will never forget its most famous alum -- NBA star Dominique Wilkins.

The Bulldogs had a decent 2006-2007 season, ending the year with a 20-14 record. They ranked fifth in the SEC East and were unable to grab an invite to the NCAA tournament.

However, UGA did make it to the second round of the SEC tournament (defeated by Florida 74-57). They also went on to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where they beat Fresno State before losing in the second round to Air Force.

Mike Mercer was starting guard last year before suffering a knee injury during the game against South Carolina. If Mercer is able to recover in time for the new season, he should be a good asset for the team. Sundiata Gaines, who led the Bulldogs in rebounding, will return this year as starting point guard to aid in their success.

In the off-season, Dennis Felton joined five other college basketball coaches to travel to Kuwait for an USO sponsored event called Operation Hardwood and kept a journal of all his events during his stay. The coaches spent six days in the Persian Gulf area coaching six different U.S. military teams.

The bulldogs will see a new addition to their line up this year after signing Maryland transfer Troy Brewer to the team. The sophomore was ranked 21st in the U.S. before signing on at Maryland where he averaged 15 points per game.
2007-2008 might be the break-out season for Georgia Basketball. Under head coach Dennis Felton, the Bulldogs have steadily improved each year. However, they have never had as much talent and experience as this year. They return four starters from last years team. We think they will end up 3rd in the SEC East and be the 6th and final SEC team to make it to the Big Dance – March Madness.
