The Auburn Tigers basketball team has a long storied tradition in the sport of football to fall back on. And, to a lesser extent, a reasonably strong tradition in the sport of basketball as well. And that's a good thing, because the current status of the Auburn basketball program may leave fans looking back at the archives to remember the good old days and the better times.

The 2007-8 Auburn basketball program went 14-16 overall and a lowly 4-12 in the SEC. And unfortunately, the team looks to have taken a big step backward as far as talent from last season to this. Gone are two key contributors to that squad. Versatile guard Frank Tolbert averaged 13.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg during the 2007-8 season, while forward Quan Prowell led the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg. Powell also polled down 6.3 rpg over the course of the season. It is going to be difficult to make up for the loss of these two key contributors.

There are some players of note returning from last year's squad. Of particular note is the return of senior forward Korvotney Barber (13.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg last season), who will be expected to provide the team with both on the court scoring as well as off the court leadership. Joining him will be senior guard Rasheem Barrett (13.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and senior guard Quantez Robertson (7.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.1 apg). In addition to these three returnees, Auburn will also be highly dependent on a pair of junior role players to step up their presence on the court during this upcoming season. Those players are junior guard DeWayne Reed (8.9 ppg) and Lucas Hargrove (7.8 ppg).

One reason why it is imperative for these secondary players to step up their game is because of the relatively weak incoming recruiting class, a class which features not a single player expected to step in and make a significant contribution this season. What this means is, it is up to last year's core of remaining starters and bench players to come together and try to build something here from the ground up, a tall order indeed.

Auburn has a long road to hoe here, and there is very little reason for optimism in the short term. That said, the Tigers are a competitive Division I school, and these are competitive athletes, and they are potentially good enough to finish with a .500 of better record overall, which would represent a small stepping stone on the long term path of redemption for this basketball program.
