Will Muschamp Biography
Will Muschamp was born in Rome, Georgia on August 3, 1971. When he was a child, his family moved to Gainesville, Florida. He will now return to Gainesville as the University of Florida Gators football coach.
His family moved back to Georgia when he was in high school. After graduating from high school, Muschamp decided to attend the University of Georgia. He would join Ray Goff's 1991 Bulldogs' squad his Freshman year and played safety as a "walk on." Before he left Georgia he would earn a scholarship and his Senior year he was named Defensive "Co-Captain."
After graduating from Georgia in 1994, Muschamp would become a graduate assistant at Auburn University for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. He would work under Wayne Hall and Bill Oliver. After earning a Master's Degree in Education he was on the move.
Upon leaving Auburn Muschamp would become the defensive secondary coach at the University of West Georgia. The following season, he would take the same position at Eastern Kentucky University. In 2000 he would get his first shot at being a Defensive Coordinator at Valdosta State University in Georgia.
He would only spend a year at Valdosta before he jumped at the chance to return to the SEC. In 2001 he joined Nick Saban at Louisiana State University as the Linebackers Coach. It was only a year later that he became the Defensive Coordinator for LSU. Muschamp's 2003 defense was one of the best in the nation. The Tigers lead the nation in scoring defense (11.0 points per game) and total defense (252 yards per game.) Muschamp's defense also lead the SEC in every major defensive category. At the end of the year, LSU won the BCS Championship.

After helping win a National Championship at LSU, Muschamp followed Nick Saban to the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. He was Assistant Head Coach for defense. He did not stay long in the NFL.
In 2006, Muschamp returned to the SEC as Defensive Coordinator for the Auburn Tigers. During his time in Auburn, the Tigers had one of the best defenses in the nation. In 2006 they only gave up 21 touchdowns. In 2007, Auburn lead the SEC in scoring defense. He would only spend two seasons at Auburn.
In 2008, Muschamp decided to try his defense in the Big 12. He was named the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Texas. Before the end of his first season he would be named the future Head Coach of the Longhorns. Texas named Muschamp "Head Coach in Waiting" to take over once Mack Brown stepped down as Head Coach. By making the move, Texas hoped to keep Muschamp around for a long time. At the time, it was not known how long Brown would stay Head Coach.
Apparently, being just a "Head Coach in waiting" was not enough for Muschamp. Once Urban Meyer decided that he wanted to spend more time with his family, Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley had to decide who to be the next Head Coach of the Florida football program. While names were thrown throughout the media, Foley said he targeted only Muschamp. The chance to coach one of the best programs in a state with so much talent was too much for him to pass on.
Muschamp reportedly got a five year contract that pays $2.7 Million a year and decided to move (with his wife, Carol, and two sons, Jackson and Whit) -- back to the U of F in Gainesville, Florida!! You can read more about the Gators football team at Florida Gators Football.
