Tommy Tuberville Biography

Auburn University Head Football Coach
Tommy Tuberville Biography

Thomas H. Tuberville was born on September 18, 1954 in Camden, Arkansas, where he played football at Harmony Grove High School. He later played and lettered as a free safety at Southern Arkansas University (SAU) from 1972-1976, where he graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He also enjoyed golf and played on SAU's golf team from 1975-1976.

Prior to becoming the Head Coach he is today, Tuberville was an assistant coach at several schools. From 1977-1979 he coached football at Hermitage High School in Arkansas, first as assistant coach, then as head coach. Next was Arkansas State University from 1980-1984, followed by the University of Miami from 1986-1993. Tuberville served as Defensive Coordinator at Texas A&M for the 1994 season, where the Aggies finished with a 10-0-1 mark.

In 1995 Tommy became Head Coach at the University of Mississippi. The Rebels managed to go 25-20 over four years there. That was a dramatic improvement for Ole Miss football. Tuberville was named the 1997 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Tommy left Ole Miss after the '98 season and accepted the Auburn University head football coach job.

Since the beginning of his reign over the Auburn University Tigers, Coach Tuberville and his team have achieved five SEC Western Division titles, an SEC Championship, and seven consecutive bowl appearances.

After a perfect 13-0 in 2004, Coach Tuberville received Coach of the Year awards from the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Any coach would be proud to see so many of his players headed for the NFL. But, after the 2004 season, when Auburn's entire starting backfield was lost to the first round of the NFL draft, Coach Tuberville faced a tremendous rebuilding challenge.

But, he was up to the challenge. The 2005 Tigers ended up with a 9-3 record and finished the regular season with victories over SEC rivals Georgia and Alabama.

Tommy Tuberville has a lot to be proud of in the players he has coached in his career. He has coached 19 players that were drafted by the NFL. In 2004, 4 players were first round NFL draft picks. 8 of his players have been selected as All-Americans, and he has had one Thorp Award Winner.

Additionally, Tuberville has coached 34 All-SEC players, 18 All-SEC Freshman, 46 SEC Players of the Week, 2 SEC Players of the year, and 1 SEC Champion Game MVP. Stats like that are no coincidence.
