Robbie Caldwell Biography
New Vanderbilt Commodore Head Coach Robbie Caldwell has replaced Bobby Johnson. And, even the "interim" tag has been removed from his title.
Caldwell began his football career as a star player at Furman University. Successful both on and off the field, Caldwell was a three year letterman in 1975 and team captain as the center in1976. Upon graduation, Furman hired it's former star as an offensive line assistant and his career began in earnest.
Despite it's being his first coaching position, the Furman offensive line was arguably where Caldwell enjoyed his greatest success to date. From 1978-1985, Caldwell's line was one of the finest in college football and Furman won the conference title six out of seven years. As a result of his achievements, NC State hired Caldwell to coach their line in 1986. He remained there until 1999 then took the same job at Vanderbilt, a position he held until his unexpected promotion this offseason.

Looking forward, Caldwell's current position and future prospects are quite interesting. A career assistant, Caldwell has never showcased the leadership skills one would presumably need to drag Vanderbilt out of the SEC basement, but he also has had little opportunity to demonstrate such skills in the past. Nonetheless, he inherits a 2-10 team lacking in both talent and confidence, so it will be interesting to see what he can do. And, unlike coaches at the top programs, Caldwell will certainly get his chance.
