Mark Richt was born on February 18, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska. Richt graduated from Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, Florida, where he played on the football team as a quarterback. He played for and graduated from the University of Miami in 1982. After college, Mark coached at Florida State as a graduate assistant coach. He later went on to become an offensive coordinator for East Carolina and then went back to Florida State as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Off the field, Richt's team consists of wife Katharyn and four children - Jonathan, born March 11, 1990; David, born in 1994; Zach, born in 1996; and, Anya, born in 1997.

In 2001, Richt replaced Jim Donnan as the Head Coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. In his first six seasons, Richt's teams have accumulated two SEC Championships, three Southeastern Conference (SEC) Eastern Division titles, and four AP Poll top ten finishes. Since 2001, Richt and the Bulldogs' record sits at an amazing 61-17.

Mark Richt is one of only six coaches to win two SEC football championships in their first five years coaching. He is also one of only five head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons. Mark is also one of only nine head football coaches in Division I-A history to record 60 or more wins in his first six seasons.

The 2006 season was especially difficult for Richt and his Bulldogs. The season began with Richt and the Bulldogs on the cover of Wheaties cereal boxes in September. And, the Bulldogs managed to start out 5-0. But, close wins over Colorado and Ole Miss gave Bulldog fans cause for conern. Once they got into the heart of their SEC schedule, Georgia lost four of their next five games (including an unprecedented loss at home to Vanderbilt). Perhaps the famous Sports Illustrated Cover curse applies equally to Wheaties Box Covers.

At 6-4, it appeared Georgia's season would "go to the dogs" in a bad way. However, Richt surprised his critics and the Bulldogs ended the season with wins over three consecutive ranked opponents: Auburn, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. The Georgia Bulldogs still failed to reach ten wins, but their strong finish boosted the spirits of the team and its fans.

Coach Richt is relentless in pushing his football players toward greatness. Thirty-two of Richt's players have been chosen in the NFL draft over the last five years. 2002 was a banner year in which eight Bulldogs were drafted by NFL teams. That was the most Georgia football players ever picked in a single year. That was followed up in 2003, with seven more Bulldogs going to the NFL.

Although many of Richt's players are going on to the NFL as professional players, Bulldog fans shouldn't worry. With a 78% winning percentage at the University of Georgia, Mark Richt and his Bulldogs are looking forward to an exciting 2007-2008 football season.
