South Carolina basketball peaked in 2006 and has headed sharply south since. Unfortunately, it appears that downward trend will continue in 2007-2008.

The Gamecocks have no Southeastern Conference (SEC) basketball championships to tout. However, in 2006, they made it all the way to the SEC Basketball Tournament Championship game, before falling by 2 points to Florida (the eventual NCAA National Champion). The Gamecocks went on to win the 2006 NIT tournament. In their history, South Carolina basketball has been selected for the NCAA tournament eight times. The men of USC are currently in their seventh season under 2004 SEC Coach of the Year Dave Odom, who has previously coached at Wake Forest and Virginia.

As noted earlier, South Carolina had a disappointing 2006-2007 basketball season, finishing with a paltry 14-16 record; last in the SEC East and last in the SEC overall. No post-season tournament invites at all last year for the Gamecocks.

2007-2007 looks to be another down year for South Carolina basketball. SEC basketball is better than ever and being in the same division with Tennessee and Kentucky will be tough.

The Gamecocks had a good recruiting season, but those freshman won't contribute much this season. The loss of Tre' Kelley will be difficult to overcome. Sophomore Mitchell Carter will return to the team as a key player this season after being a leader in points and rebounds for USC in 2007. Chad Gray will return for his second year with the Gamecocks and is expected to start at forward.

The Gamecocks will start the 2007-2008 season with a bang as they celebrate their 100th season of college basketball at USC. The team is set to celebrate the big anniversary on February 23rd when they play Mississippi State at home.

Former Gamecock Tre Kelley, who was named to the All-SEC first team last year, has signed on to play with the Cibona Zagreb in Croatia for two years.

USC will see a new addition to its coaching staff after Sheldon Everett was hired as the new director of basketball for the Gamecocks. Everett, who is a former letter-winner at USC, will be replacing Bill Old who took the director position at Virginia Tech. The Gamecocks will kick off their new season on November 9th when they play state rivals South Carolina State at home.

We think USC will end up about the same as last year - still last in the SEC East. But, probably better than either LSU or Ole Miss.
