Don't judge the past couple of seasons by the record. Over that span, the Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team has underachieved. Despite having talent that many expected would challenge the elite SEC members for the SEC championship, the program floundered within the conference, finishing a respectable, hardly dominant 9-7 last season. And unfortunately for the Razorbacks, the window looks like it may have closed, as far more talent appears to be cycling out than is cycling in.
It should come as no surprise, then, given the magnitude of the departures from last season that there is not a ton of returning talent to speak of. The one bright spot among the returning players is junior guard Patrick Beverley, who will be relied on to take on a leadership role at the start of the upcoming season. How much Beverley is able to improve upon his 12.1 ppg and 6.6 rpg output will likely depend on the ability of his teammates, among them junior guard Stefan Walsh (5.3 ppg) and Michael Washington (4.3 ppg) to keep Beverley from being double teamed on a consistent basis.Arena: The Bud Walton

Arkansas fans may be able to take some solace in the fact that the Razorback recruiting class is considered somewhat deep, with no less than 6 recruits coming aboard in some capacity or another. Among these, two recruits stand out in particular, and given the losses experienced by the Razorback squad in the off-season, these two may be counted upon to contribute to the cause relatively quickly. Those two recruits are point guard Rotnei Clarke and forward Jason Henry.
The 2008-9 season looks like it may be a rough one for the Arkansas Razorbacks, and to a large extend, the program may just be the victim of some bad timing. While a decent recruiting class is cycling in, the players in the incoming class are too young and too raw to serve as adequate replacements for the talent that has left since the conclusion of last season. If the Razorbacks can play through some of the inexperience against the early non-conference schedule, the team still may have a respectable SEC record. If not, it could be ugly.
