Tracy Rocker Biography
Tracy Rocker was known throughout the SEC as a man among boys. The Atlanta native became the first player in SEC history to win the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy in the same season as a standout player for the Auburn Tigers. He was also voted to the school’s Team of the Century in 1993. After Rocker’s college career was over, the awards kept coming in as the National Football Foundation inducted him into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2005, he was inducted into the Alabama State Sports Hall of Fame.
A lightning quick defensive end, Rocker also brought power and speed to his position and became the benchmark for all other defensive ends in the SEC.
Rocker was a two-time All-American and a three-time All-SEC player. He was also named SEC Player of the Year in 1988. By the time he left The Plains, he finished his career with 354 tackles, including 21 quarterback sacks and 48 tackles for loss. He led the Tigers to two SEC championships in 1987 and ’88, an SEC record of 12-1-1 and births in back to back Sugar Bowls.
Auburn was co-champs of the SEC, along with LSU, in 1988. Rocker was the leader of a defense that dominated not just the SEC, but every team on their schedule.
The Tigers gave up only 7.6 points per game, (3.5 to the rest of the SEC) and posted three shutouts in a row. One of the Tigers two losses that year was in a game known throughout the SEC as the “Earthquake Game.” Auburn led LSU 6-0 late in the fourth quarter, only to see LSU’s Tommy Hodson throw a short TD pass to Eddie Fuller to win the game 7-6. The touchdown brought such an eruption from the crowd that it registered on the seismograph machine at the LSU geology department.

The two losses Auburn suffered that season were by a total of seven points, and both games came down to one play in the end zone. One was the before mentioned LSU touchdown, and the other was a broken up pass as time was running out that preserved a 13-7 victory for Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
Rocker was selected in the third round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins and was an All-Rookie selection in 1990. However, after playing only two seasons in the NFL, he finished his pro career with the Orlando Thunder in the World Football League.
He is currently on the coaching staff at Auburn, after stints at Ole Miss, Arkansas, Troy and Cincinnati.
