Shawn Andrews Biography

Shawn Andrews was one of the more decorated linemen who pulled on an Arkansas jersey. He was named the 2003 SEC Offensive Player of the Year by CollegeFootballNews.com and was a finalist for the Outland and Lombardi trophies. He earned All-American honors in 2002 and 2003.

He earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy during the 2002 and 2003 season as the Southeastern Conference's best blocker. He also won the Parker Award that same season as the nation's best offensive lineman. In his thirty-five games played, he gave up a total of two sacks.

One of the highlights in the 2002 season for Andrews was the regular season finale against LSU. In one of the most exciting games ever in War Memorial Stadium history, the Hogs and Tigers played a game for the ages. With the Western Division championship on the line, as well as for the Golden Boot, a gold trophy that resembles the two states of Arkansas and Louisiana, Arkansas was behind by six points with nine seconds remaining. Quarterback Matt Jones threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Decori Birmingham, and kicker David Carlton made a long extra point to finish the Tigers off, 21-20. The reason why it was a long extra point was the Hog fans pouring on the field, which penalized Arkansas 15 yards for excessive celebration. The penalty moved the ball back and made the extra point a 35-yard kick. The kick just curved inside the upright, which sent the Hogs to the SEC Championship game against Georgia.

2002 also saw Andrews play in one of the longest games in Arkansas' history as they went six overtimes with Tennessee before a Jason Whitten TD catch gave the Vols the victory 41-38.

Andrews was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles as the 16th overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft. Beginning in 2005, he was selected to three pro bowls during his career.

In an interesting twist to his pro career, the Eagles cut Andrews in March 2010 after he was besieged with injuries, as well as dealing with bouts of depression and mental issues. In June, Andrews was drafted by the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL, but declined to sign in hopes of landing with an NFL team. His patience was rewarded as the New York Giants signed him in August of 2010.

Shawn's brother, Stacy, is a starting guard for the Eagles.
