Georgia Bulldog's football had a decent year in 2008. But, it was disappointing because the Dog's came into the year ranked #1 nationally. Unfortunately, for the Bulldogs, and every other team in the SEC East, they won't be able to match up with what may turn out to be one of the best teams in college football history -- the 2009 Florida Gators.

The 2008 Georgia squad posted a record of 10-3 overall, including a big 24-12 win over Big 10 power Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. However, possibly even more impressive was its strong 6-2 record in the Southeastern Conference.

If any SEC team will be led by its defense in 2009, that team has to be the Georgia Bulldogs. This defense in 2008, was sporatic and disappointing in the big games. However, in 2009, UGA returns 9 starters on defense and looks to be much better. Linebacker Rennie Curren, who is entering his junior season, was a force last year at the position, and all over the field. He amassed 115 total tackles including a number of big tackles for a loss, and also contributed 3 sacks and a slew of times he was able to hurry the quarterback. Curran is the type of player who can only get better, and a similar or better season to the one which he posted in 2009 could have NFL teams calling a season early.

Elsewhere on defense is more of the same, that being, star-power. Akeem Dent's rapidly developing game should provide Curren with additional support amongst the linebackers. In addition, the Georgia secondary also looks to be a source of team strength this season, returning a number of talented contributors. Reshard Jones may be the cream of the crop at the safety position for the Bulldogs. Rounding out the defense is an above average defensive line made up of grinders and attackers the likes of Roderick Battle and Geno Atkins.

Offensively, the Dogs will be challenged considering the departures of Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. Joe Cox, the player who is widely expected to be taking over the starting quarterback duties come fall, is a talented, above average replacement who will fit nicely into the position. And a similar situation exists among their running backs. Sure, the loss of Knowshon Moreno will be felt, but very few teams come to the field with such depth of talent at the RB position as the Bulldogs have. With guys like Caleb King, Carlton Thomas, and Richard Samuel competing for carries, the chances are high that this team will be more than capable.

When everything is taken into consideration, this looks like a Georgia team that can have a good year; compete for 2d in the SEC East and make a decent bowl game. The team will probably take a step back offensively, although it should still be able to put points up. But this team's defense will be as good if not better than last season, and as such, this is a team that should be within a game or so of Florida, the likely SEC champion once again.
