Gary Blair Biography
The Texas A&M Lady Aggies have a familiar face to the SEC and one team in particular stalking the sidelines. It's none other than former Razorback head coach Gary Blair. Blair is a great coach with a storied background and an excellent record behind him. He led the lady razorbacks to some of their best seasons just as he is now doing in Texas with A&M.
Gary Blair has led this team to it's only ever number one ranking in the polls and 6 straight NCAA tournament appearances. During his tenure they have become a dominant team in their old conference and look to take on Tennessee as the pre=immennent powerhouse in the SEC.
Blair has done so many things in his career. He has accomplished a lot that some coaches don't. He has moved around some so he's done things like taking two teams to the final four( A&M and Arkansas) this is something only three coaches have ever done. He has done remarkable things. He is in the top 15 in career victories as a coach.
A&M is 115-29 in the last four years. It is the best four years that they have ever had. Blair keeps coaching, the girls keep listening and playing hard, and the teams he coach keep winning. He got his 500th career win on Feb. 20 of 2008 against Iowa State. He was the 36th DI Coach all time to get this honor. He has a career winning percentage of .711.
He was with Stephen F. Austin from 85-93, Arkansas from 93-2003. He led the Lady âBacks to the 1998 Final Four and the Lady Jacks to four NCAA Sweet 16 spots.
Blair has brought Texas A&M to the top of Women's Basketball with a spot in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2008 and Sweet 16 in 2009. The Aggies have three overall league championships over the past 5 seasons. Blair not only has seen his success get his women wins in the NCAA, he has had had six players get drafted to the WNBA in the past four years. Sydney Colson was recently selected with the 16th pick, the highest that any A&M woman has gone.
Blair also puts people in the seats. He goes out and is an effective speaker as well as putting an exciting brand of basketball on the court. He is good with people and good for the community. The attendance has risen, which helps the program, and helps recruiting and gets the team doing what they need to do. All of this brings in revenue for the school for nicer classrooms, dorms, arenas, whatever they need and Gary Blair is well aware that any improvements to his school mean improvements to his basketball team.
Gary Blair has been honored with many things. He is a graduate from Bryan Adams High School in Dallas. He was an all-city baseball city. He is in 3 hall of fame classes. The Texas High School Hall of Fame Class of 2002, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Southland Conference Class Hall of Honor in 2009.
Gary Blair is a great coach and a better man. He is adored in places he leaves and will be a good addition to the SEC. The SEC is a better conference with Gary Blair.
