Wendell Hudson Biography

Alabama Crimson Tide women’s basketball coach Wendell Hudson was born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 16, 1951. After starring in high school, Hudson played forward for the Crimson Tide from 1969-1973. This earned him a job as a low level assistant on the Crimson Tide bench; he held this position until 1979 when he left his alma mater to become the top assistant coach at Northern Alabama.

Hudson has almost three decades of experience coaching basketball and is one of the most experienced coaches in women’s basketball today. After leaving his alma mater, Hudson worked as an assistant for seven years at Northern Alabama (1979-82), Rice (1982-85), Ole Miss (1985), and Baylor (1986). He was then hired as the athletic director and head coach at McLennan College; a position he held all the way from 1986-2003. During this time, he compiled a 239-127 overall record and was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

After seventeen years at McLannan, Hudson decided to return to his alma mater in 2003 as the assistant athletic director with the title of Associate Athletics Director for Alumni Relations. In 2008, he moved positions internally and became the head coach of the women’s basketball team. Though his record thus far has been dismal, including a 12-18 overall record in 2009-10, it is too early to call a verdict on Hudson’s tenure just yet.
