Last Season's Discussion:
Tennessee Volunteers Swimming and Diving is an exciting thing. So exciting that UT's men's team is currently ranked 11th nationally; their women's team ranked 12th!
After concluding the pre-season traning, the Vols had an intrasquad competition, where the Orange team barely outperformed the White team, scoring 147-146 at the end. Coach Trembley was, as usual, unhappy with the intrasquad, but mentioned that it wouldn't be right for a coach to be pleased with an intrasquad meet. However, he expected more from the team and felt the competition was not up to par to the team's training.
The Tennessee Vols swimming and diving men's team had a season opener against Louisville Cardinals on October the 20th. While traveling to Louisville, Kentucky for their meet, which was supposed to take a mere four hours on the bus, instead took ten as the bus barely avoided an accident. Despite that and lack of time for preparation before the meet, the team stayed positive and were able to secure a victory with a score of 165-130. The head coach, John Trembley, complimented the team, but also mentioned that they were sloppy in some areas.
The Tennessee Vols swimming and diving team had another meet, at the beginning of November, when they met Auburn. The meet was filled with excitement and expectations, especially considering that the Auburn was a national defending champion for five times. The Vols, ranked No. 11, snatched another victory for the season. They posted 170-127 at the end, squarely defeating Auburn. The Vols placed first in all but one swimming events and split the diving events with the Tigers.
Fans were enthusiastic about their home team, which no doubt helped the Vols overcome such a "classy opponent" as the Auburn Tigers. Coach Trembley complimented the Tigers and their coach, Richard Quick, deeming it "an honor" to compete with them. He further stated, as he had in the past, that the team is the best the university had yet and while they may not be the highest ranked or win the Southeastern Conference Championship, he is very proud of them. The Tennessee Vols swimming and diving team seemed honored as well, as they shook hands with the defeated Auburn team and walked around the pool to shake hands with coach Bussard of Tigers.
