2012 Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Review

With Pat Summitt's Recent Alzheimers Announcement -- I'm thinking the Lady Vols are gunna go all the way in 2012..

The NCAA basketball season is right around the corner. Read this 2011-2012 NCAA Women's Basketball Preview which has the Lady Vols headed back to the Final Four.

Once again, the Lady Vols Won the SEC (regular season and tourney) and made it further than any other SEC team in March Madness. They ended up losing to Notre Dame in the Round of 8. The Lady Vols were 20-0 all-time against Notre Dame before that loss.

The Tennessee Volunteers are still the number 1 women's basketball team in the SEC, but the gap could be closing in the rest of the SEC East. I give the edge to the Volunteers because of the pedigree of their head coach, Pat Summitt. Also, I give some credence to their high ranking on the NCAA; they start their season with the number 4 ranking in the AP Poll, which gives them a boost come time for the NCAA Tournament.

Pat Summitt has shown that she is one of the greatest coaches in women's college basketball history. She has led the Lady Vols to 8 National Championships and 19 SEC Championships. Her career record, 1005-193, speaks of a champion coach that knows how to win every year, and a coach that is used to reloading and not rebuilding.

Summitt has definitely reloaded this year, as she returns all five starters from last season, as well as having two new recruits, Meighan Simmons and Lauren Avant, that look like they could have an impact this season. This should lead to another great year for the Lady Vols, and I would not be surprised if they competed for the National Championship with the amount of talent that the program returns.

The biggest plus for the Lady Vols is the return of senior Angie Bjorklund, who was their leading scorer last year. She nearly averaged 14 points per game, and is looking to build on that performance this season. The return of junior Shekinna Stricklen will also help matters, as she averaged 12.7 points per game. These two women should wreak havoc in most of their games.

Kelley Cain is another returning player that should really increase the team's chances of winning another SEC Championship. She was by far the most prolific shot blocker on the team. With a defender that powerful returning, it will be difficult for other teams to go score for score with Tennessee's high powered offense. I look for Tennessee to put many games away early, as it is difficult to find an answer for the shear defensive and offensive power that Tennessee can put on the court.
