South Carolina vs Nebraska Capital One Bowl Preview

I predict that the South Carolina Gamecocks will beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers in The Capital One Bowl on Monday, January 2.

According to their records, the teams are fairly evenly matched with the Gamecocks having a season record of 10-2 and the Huskers, a record of 9-3. However, as we all know, anything can happen in college bowl games. Ever since South Carolina began starting Connor Shaw at quarterback, they've been a different team. Shaw is both a very accurate passer and an explosive runner. He reads defenses well and locates holes and gaps with ease. The Huskers defense has struggled with teams who have quarterbacks that are both good passers and mobile on their feat. Take for example the three teams that beat them in the regular season, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Michigan. All three of those teams have quarterbacks who can get it done both in the air and on the ground. Nebraska's defense has seemed to be a step behind in these big games where it's hard to predict when the quarterback is going to throw or run. Something that really hurt Nebraska is when their predicted top defensive player, Jared Crick, was sidelined for the season with a torn chest muscle. It's been real difficult for his understudies to pick up the slack.

Offensively, Nebraska's quarterback, Taylor Martinez, has been better than last year, but all but predictable. His passing has improved but he is not very consistent. He is a great runner, but South Carolina's defense will luckily put that to a halt after he tries a run play once or twice in the beginning of the game. Nebraska's main offensive threat in this game will be Rex Burkhead, an extremely versatile back who can do about anything to gain yardage. I would predict that most of Nebraska's scoring will come from Burkhead and their kicker, Maher, in this game. You also can't forget that South Carolina plays in the extremely tough SEC Conference, they were tested tremendously game in and game out all season long.

Yes, the Big Ten is a fairly tough conference as well, but it's certainly no SEC. I predict that the final score in this game will be, Gamecocks 34 - Huskers 21.
