2009 Auburn Tigers Men’s Swimming and Diving
Over the course of the history of men's swimming & diving in the Southeastern Conference, a number of different teams have held the title of being the most dominant program in the conference at any given time. Florida had its time; Tennessee had a run of its own. Even Georgia had a stretch where it was the team to beat in the Southeastern Conference. Well, one thing is for certain. Auburn's time is now. It has been the single best team in the Southeastern Conference for the past 15 years, and it shows no signs of letting up now. In fact, this past year Auburn's men's swim and dive team won the 2009 NCAA Swimming & Diving National Championship -- again. The Lady Tigers came in 6th.
Auburn's men's swimming and diving got off to a little bit of a later start than a number of other SEC program. It only began competing in the SEC in 1970, while many of the elder statesmen of the conference were competing more than 30 years earlier. And this late start may explain why the team took a while to get up to speed in the Southeastern Conference. However, a while is a relative term. The team struggled for three seasons, finishing last in the SEC Championships from 1970-1972. However, in 1973, the team vaulted itself to 4th overall in the SEC Championships, and for the majority of the following few years, the team managed to maintain a top 3-4 ranking in the conference.
Auburn slowly and steadily climbed the conference rankings, until. In 1994, the team won its first SEC Championship, in a close victory over traditional power Florida. And things just kept going from there. Over the course of the next 15 seasons, Auburn went on to win a remarkable 14 SEC titles, with the only faltering coming in 1996 to Tennessee. Along the way, the team went on to some absolutely massive blowout victories in the SEC Championships, including a 300+ point win in 2004.
2009 Auburn Tigers Women’s Swimming and Diving
The men are not the only squad who are currently dominating the Southeastern Conference when it comes to swimming and diving. The Auburn women are taking the lead of their male counterparts, and are currently the cream of the crop among SEC women. And because Auburn's arrival to the SEC came at the dawn of the conference, there was no need to play catch-up.
In fact, the Auburn women's swimming and diving team was competitive from day one in the Southeastern Conference. For the first few seasons, Auburn managed a bronze medal third place finish overall in the SEC Championships. For the first few years of that run, the team finished 3rd to the same two teams, Florida and Alabama. Over the course of the late 80's through the early 90's, Auburn's women's swimming and diving teams fell off a bit, finishing closer to the bottom of the SEC more often than not during the stretch. However, as the 90's progressed, the team began to perform at a higher level. First, finishing consistently 2nd, and then, in 2003, something special happened.
The Auburn women finally won their first SEC Championship that year. The team not only won, but won rather handily over the field. This win kicked off a run that has been slightly shorter, but no less dominant, than that of their male counterparts. Over the past 6 years, Auburn has won 5 SEC Championships, only losing once, in 2006, to Georgia, in a nail biter (1,094-1075).
