2009 Arkansas Razorbacks Women's Swimming and Diving

Arkansas does not compete in men's swimming and diving; however it has competed in women's swimming and diving as part of the Southeastern Conference since 1992. Over the course of that 17 years since it began participating in the SEC, its level of performance within the conference has been consistent Unfortunately for Razorbacks' fans, the level of performance has been consistently poor, at least when compared to its SEC counterparts.

In its inaugural season competing in the SEC, Arkansas finished a respectable (for a first year program) 8th place in the 10 team SEC Championships. However, following that campaign, the team fell back into the SEC cellar, a position that it held for 8 straight seasons to follow. And, unfortunately, in many of these seasons, Arkansas trailed the team it immediately followed badly. An example of this could be found in the 1995 season in which the margin was over 140 points (323 to 181.5).

If there is any solace, any reason of hope for fans of the Arkansas women's swimming and diving program, it is that, since breaking out of that dreadful streak of consecutive last place finishes, the team has actually managed a few finishes of 7th place. In the most recent occurrence, just last season in 2008, the team finished 7th, and finished ahead of 3 teams, the most teams it has ever finished ahead of at the SEC Championships. 2009 will be a key indicator for this team to see whether this was a one-time occurrence, or a trend in which this program may be ready to rise.
