As usual, the cover-up is worse than the crime

If the Pats' illegal taping did not help them in past seasons, then why did Goodell decide to destroy the evidence?
Because the public wasn't interested in their contents? Because of a lack of file cabinets? Please.
The primary argument made by Patriot apologist is a combination of: (A) Every other team probably does the same (yet no proof of this outside of an isolated incident by the Jets), and; (B) Taping signals really doesn't help a team very much (then why is it against the rules? And didn't we hear the same thing about steroids, that they really don't help players that much?)
Let's suppose for the sake of argument that either of these two arguments are valid. Why, then, destroy the only evidence which could show that this ill-gotten intelligence was insubstantial and thus really couldn't have benefited the Patriots over the past several seasons?
There is only one reason to destroy evidence; to cover up the scope of a crime. And once again, like the suckers that we are, as long as times are good, we simply don't care.
We didn't care about McGwire and Sosa or about Brady Anderson mysteriously hitting 50 jacks for the O's because HEY! baseball was back, baby!
And now that the NFL is king, the last thing we ever want to know is if the Patriot's dynasty was aided by cheating.
Thanks to Commissioner Goodell' shredder and our apathy, and the average sports fan's attention span, we'll never have to know the truth.
