2012 Ole Miss Rebels Football Preview
2011 SEC Record: 0-8 (6th SEC West) – Overall 2-10
Returning starters: 5 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teams
The Good: Well, there’s not much of it as the Rebels are rebuilding under first year head coach Hugh Freeze. The only thing I could find is they have a really good punter in Tyler Campbell. Campbell led the nation two years ago in average yards per kick and averaged over 40 yards per kick last year. Since he had a lot of practice in 2011, I expect him to better those numbers this year and reclaim the top spot in the nation.
The Bad: Gee, how much time do you have to read this? The Rebels lack the talent it takes to be successful in the SEC, but they make up for it by being incredibly thin at several positions. Freeze did not name a starting QB in the spring, and there’s nothing at running back after Jeff Scott gets a water break. To quote from Major League, “I never heard of half these guys, and the ones I have heard of are way past their prime. Some, of these guys never had a prime…”
The Ugly: The Rebs ended the 2011 season with an all time SEC record for consecutive conference losses with 14. I have a feeling, similar to the feeling I had about Tennessee last year, they might add eight more losses to that streak. They ranked 11th in the SEC in offense, and 12th in defense last year as well. That’s not good. Somewhere, the great Johnny Vaught is rolling over in his grave at the state of affairs in Oxford.
The Schedule: Ole Miss opens the season with three straight home games out of conference, but one of those is against Texas. Before starting league play, they travel to New Orleans to play Tulane, so there is a chance they could come back to Oxford at 3-1. Trips to Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and LSU will not be pretty.
What will happen: Ole Miss will struggle this season, as both the players and coaches will spend the fall getting comfortable with each other. Unfortunately, the schedule is a beast, and playing in the best division, as well as the best conference, in America, will not do them any favors. If they can win one conference game this year, it will be a miracle.
Bowl Game: As Brian Johnson from Breakfast Club once said, “Um, I can answer that now. That would be a no for me…”
2012 Prediction: 7th in the SEC West.
