2011 Ole Miss Rebels Preview

Hotty Toddy By Golly if: The SEC Decides to decide games by tailgate sites. If so, Ole Miss wins the National Championship every year. But since the games are decided on the field, the only hope for the Rebs (or whatever their mascot is now) comes from a source that every team can build from: the offensive line. Ole Miss returns four of their five starters from a year ago, and the fifth starter is has SEC experience in Arkansas transfer Matt Hall. With a huge, physical line that will open the running lanes, this might give the offense time to gel. And everyone knows that to win in the SEC, you have to be able to run the football consistently.

The night they drove ole Dixie down if: They do not find a defense. Last year, the Rebels ranked 11th in total defense and dead last in scoring defense in the SEC. Ouch! The entire defensive line, two of three linebackers and half the secondary must be replaced. This year, they return three starters, but that might be a good thing since the majority of what was a porous defense is gone.

Schedule: Ole Miss might have a chance to get better in a hurry as they will not face a big time opponent until late September when Georgia comes to town. If the Rebs had more in the cupboard, I would write that they have an outside shot at winning the West as all of their tough games are at home. After Georgia, then it's Alabama, Arkansas and LSU all coming to Oxford. The finale is at Mississippi State, but in the Egg Bowl, anything is possible. An out of conference schedule of BYU, Southern Illinois, Fresno State and Louisiana Tech might be the thing to get the younger players some much-needed experience.

Intangibles: Whenever a team is not predicted to do anything expect stink up every stadium they play in, that's motivation to prove the "experts" wrong. If the new offensive coordinator, David Lee, can get the trust and heart of his offense, who knows what is possible?

There are just too many holes to fill from a team that last year had plenty of them. Playing in the SEC West is not a cakewalk anymore, and having to play Alabama, LSU and Arkansas, in addition to the rest of the SEC, is too much to ask this team to compete with. However, it is not a total loss since there is the Grove, and that has always been the tonic to take the sting out of having a rough season. Just ask Brian and Stacy (right).
