When it comes to college football, no league is as impressive as the Southeastern Conference. From Alabama to LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, the SEC is where many of the NFL's next stars will be found with its teams continuing to dominate the national championship.
In fact, since the inception of the College Football Playoff, the SEC has been represented five times in as many years with Alabama making four appearances (winning two, losing two).
Indeed, Alabama was there again this year. While the team was defeated by an impressive Clemson, the Tide once again lived up to expectation as the modern era's most prolific college football dynasty. Rightly tipped to go all the way to the final by USA Today, the team from Tuscaloosa once again showcased the impressive talent traditionally associated with the SEC. Since 2000, only five national title games have been played without a team from the Southeastern Conference and on two occasions the final has been contested by two SEC teams.
Continuing to shine, the conference has naturally featured strongly in the recent Week 15 AP Poll, and five of its teams compiled 10-win seasons with no other Power 5 Conference having more than two teams reach that mark. Bowl season went well too as four of the SEC's top five teams won, with 11 out of 14 teams eligible. That's the most of any FBS conference.
The SEC might have underperformed overall in the Bowl games but there were some standout wins for the conference such as Auburn smashing Purdue, Kentucky beating Penn State and LSU shutting down UCF. Alabama's advance also saw the team overcome Heisman winner Kyler Murray on their way past the Oklahoma Sooners.
If any further proof were needed, AP All-American selections saw 11 First-Team All-Americans emerge from the SEC. That matched the total of the other Power Five conferences.
That has led to commentators and fans discussing which college stars will make the leap to the NFL in 2019. Alabama's top-rated players are clearly favorites to be picked up in the draft. Sophomore DT Quinnen Williams tops the bill according to 247 Sports which called him one of the best players in all of college football. His 18 tackles for loss ranks ninth most in a single season and includes eight sacks leading to some naming him in the same breath as the number one overall pick in 2019.
Elsewhere, Pats Pulpit, a site devoted to the New England Patriots, believes Alabama's Raekwon Davis would be a good draft acquisition in the spring to help the Pats towards an NFL title in a year's time (and perhaps improve upon its fourth-favorites tag in 2019, rated at 7.00 on MoPlay behind the Rams, Chiefs and Saints).
As we look forward to the 2019 recruiting class, the SEC will inevitably feature greatly. Its top teams - Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M - sit alongside another 10 from the SEC making the top 25. As the NFL seeks new talent in 2019, the Southeastern Conference will again offer plenty of potential.
