Texas A&M Football History
The Texas A&M Football team has and storied tradition and history of success. They go way back with teams from the Big 12, but also with a few teams currently or who will be in the SEC. They have obvious roots to Missouri, but also Arkansas from the old SWC, as well as having a spirited rivalry with LSU. Most of these rivalries have favored the opponents, especially in recent history. With a new coach and philosophy to try and turn things around though, we may see a whole new side to the Aggies. I truly believe their addition to our conference in football will strengthen the play that we have as well as add a pipeline to recruiting in Texas for all of the SEC schools.
The Texas A&M football team was a charter member of the SWC in 1912. They had a big history there with mostly Texas teams. The teams played outdoors at Kyle Field. The new coach that was just hired after the school decided to go in another direction from Mike Sherman is Kevin Sumlin. Sumlin was hired on December 1, 2011. The team was independent from 1895-1902 then in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association followed by being back independent for two years, then back in the previous conference for two years.
They then went to the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. From 1915-1995 they were in the Southwestern Conference. They joined the Big 12 Conference (South Division) after that until entering the Southeastern Conference in 2012 effective as of July. They have won one National Championship in 1939. Most of their better seasons were early on in the team's history. They had a stretch with Jackie Sherril ad R.C. Slocum Coaching respectively in the 80's and 90's where they had some very good seasons, but the best chances at championships came in the teens to 20's.
The Aggies have won 3 divisional championships in 97, 98, and 2010. Slocum won the first two and Mike Sherman the latter one. The Aggies are only 14-19 in Bowl games, but only 2-9 since they have become a part of the Big 12. So recent success in Bowl Games has not been there for them. They Lost to Georgia in 2009 20-44, Tennessee in 2004 7-38, and LSU in 2010 24-41. They did beat Northwestern in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas in 2011 33-22. The Aggies have only been ranked in the AP final 25 ranking once since 2000. They were 9th in 2010.
The Aggies have had a lot of trouble playing against the SEC in the past few years, which makes it difficult for a bit as they are joining, but they will eventually catch up. It was not a quick transition for Arkansas, but it seems they are finally catching up to speed with the big boys in the SEC. All good things take time and this is like anything else. They hold a 58-79 record against the SEC, they've tied 6 times. They've had high scoring games, scoring 2140 points, but have allowed 2298.
