Why no mention anywhere of the Tennessee teams of the early- or late-30s? Weren't the 38-9-40 squads undefeated in regular season play, or darn close to it?

Editor's Note: Yep, good point, we should add the 1938 11-0 National Championship team. Thanks!

Ah...Neyland's Teams Weren't "official" #1
by: Mo Johnson

Hey Phil, checked into this, after all I'm a Tennessee fan so certainly would want all their NC's included. But, I was reminded that we based this page on teams that were actual or official #1--1938 TN had more titles (named #1 by more selectors) but TCU was the "OFFICIAL" National Champion in 1938 because the Frogs won the AP thus it was the official #1 for that season.

But, thanks for your comment. We'll be adding a pdf to clarify this that will have a chart--of teams that had more actual #1 in a respective season; yet because they were not an AP-UPI #1, they weren't the Champion for that year.

Another, case in Point: 1953 Maryland was #1--won AP/UP; but ND had more actual....in 1964 there was a 3-way tie for #1--as 3 schools had 3 actual titles.

College football has always been blessed/cursed with this problem because it has no playoff. You can read lot's more about those issues at BCS Controversy.
