The world has many famous stadiums but what are the most famous and what stadium, perhaps, is out of its depth? We focus on two iconic grounds and one which is lesser known but is still currently in the big time. What can you do in these locations when there is no sporting event on?
Anfield - Liverpool FC
One of the globes most celebrated teams Liverpool FC play in front of 'The Kop' which is a large single tiered stand. Although not the largest in capacity (only the 7th largest in the Premiership), it is certainly one of the loudest. There is currently an expansion plan in the stadium to increase its capacity from 45,000 to 59,000. It goes without saying that Liverpool is home to The Beatles so no visit to Liverpool is complete with a trip to 'The Cavern Club' and also the Albert Docks.
San Siro - AC Milan and Inter Milan
Both teams share this iconic ground and are possibly the strongest rivals which share the same city. Opening in 1926 the stadium enjoyed improvements prior to the 1990 Italian World Cup which is well regarded as one of the greatest in its history. The 2016 Champions League final will also take place here so it's obvious that it still has a special place for sports fans. With a population of 1.3 million Milan is one of Europe's historic cities and its links to fashion and food is well documented. The city has 15 cafes, bars and restaurants that have been in operation for at least 70 years so why not see what has kept them popular for so long.
Las Vegas ground
The 'Sam Boyd' stadium (formally known as the Silver Bowl) is primarily designed for hosting American football and has a capacity of 35,000 which can be increased to 40,000 as one side is not permanent. ESPN events run the 'Las Vegas Bowl' at the stadium and its college football game draws large crowds. Away from American Football the city of Las Vegas is famous for its bright lights, casinos and real American exuberance. Traditional 24 hour casinos draw in tourists while you can also play the rapidly developing online games within the city. Lucky Nugget Casino (could this sound any more Vegas) features many games such as fruit machines, video poker and slots.
Now it's not all glitz and glamour in sport so what about Bournemouth in the English Premiership. Newcomers to the top league this team are becoming increasingly known within sport due to their Premiership status.
A.F.C Bournemouth
As first timers in the English football Premiership A.F.C Bournemouth are currently struggling despite a good start in the top flight. They play at the 'Vitality Stadium' but traditionalists call it Dean Court. The club introduced a new black and red strip inspired by AC Milan in 1971! Away from football Bournemouth offers two piers, one of which was recently renovated. Oddly, Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein) is buried at Bournemouth.
So from high fashion in Milan to gothic graves in Bournemouth ther are many stadiums and destinations where you can enjoy sport and non-sporting activities.
