Alabama vs LSU won't be the first.
In digging through a book "The SEC (c) 1979 Bert Sugar...I located a number of SEC schools played a fellow conference member in a bowl game; these teams never met in the regular season.
BUT, one SEC vs SEC regular match was different.
LSU, off from its 1st NC in 1958 was still winning the following year.
Counting the season finale in 1957, all of 1958 and the 1st 7 in 1959--totalled 19 games without a setback.
Game and win #19 was a night Tiger fans have recalled for ages.
It was Oct. 31; a home game against the Ole Miss Rebels, winners of 7 straight.
The vistors led 3-0 and were forced to punt to the Tigers.
LSU's fammed back, Billy Cannon fielded the punt, on his own 11-yard line. He zigged and zagged down the field and through the would-be tacklers--all missed.
Cannon's run that night has become a part of College Football's lore and has been replayed countless times.
The PR gave LSU a 7-3 victory and they would go on to finish their season at 9-2; but still advanced to play in the Sugar Bowl.
In the post season game, where they met an opponent which had lost once in the 1959 season--to LSU.
That's right!! LSU and Ole Miss would not only play in the regular season but also as Sugar Bowl opponents.
The Winner: Ole Miss 21-0
