To some, the SEC has lost a bit of its luster in the past few years. While Alabama is still considered the best team in the country, critics say that the Big 10, ACC and others have more depth and are more exciting on a weekly basis. Let's take a look at why the critics are wrong to say that the SEC isn't the best conference in the country.
The SEC Has Six Teams in the Top 25
There are half a dozen teams in the College Football Playoff rankings as of Nov. 15. In addition to Alabama at number one, Auburn, LSU and Tennessee are ranked 15th, 16th and 19th respectively. Florida is number 23 in the polls while Texas A$M is number 25 in the latest poll.
All 14 Teams Could Be Bowl Eligible This Year
Of the 14 teams in the SEC this season, eight of them already have six or more wins. Another three schools currently have five wins, which means that they only need one more to assure themselves a bowl game. Of the three schools who have four wins of fewer, two of them could still get to six wins before the season is out. Missouri at 3-7 could still make a bowl game if they win out. With a 5-7 record, they could still be invited to a bowl game if there aren't enough teams with six wins to fill all available slots.
While there are those who are quick to say that the SEC is not the best conference in football, that may not be the case. Almost any SEC team can beat a top team in any other conference, and they typically dominate weaker competition whether it is on the road or at home. It is likely that Alabama easily plays in a New Year’s Bowl Game and wins the national title while several other schools win bowl games and finish with winning seasons.
Your Team Still Gloats About a Win Against the SEC
The best way to measure the strength of a conference is by how meaningful a win is against a team from that conference. For instance, Florida State's season opening win against Ole Miss may be one of their best this season. This is despite the fact that the Rebels are 5-5 overall and 2-4 in their conference.
For Middle Tennessee State, beating Missouri earlier this season may be among the biggest wins in school history. Missouri is currently 3-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Still, the Blue Raiders will forever remember the time that they beat an SEC school on the road.
