SEC Prospects Who Could Impact The 2019 MLB Draft

Major League Baseball prospects don't make their impact in the league as immediately as in other sports, as they are given the chance to get ready to play at the highest level of the sport in the minor leagues.

For these SEC baseball prospects, fans will have the chance to say that they knew them well before they reached the highest points in baseball. These prospects, in particular, have a great chance to be high draft picks and produce elite professional careers.

Zack Thompson - Kentucky

There is nothing in baseball that gives you a boost toward becoming a top prospect quite like being a left-handed pitcher. Left-handed pitching is extremely difficult to hit, making it extremely valuable at any level of the sport. Zack Thompson is a great example of left-handed pitching being treated like a complete gem, even if there are some flaws that need to be addressed in the player's game.

The flaws for Zack Thompson aren't through any fault of his own, as injuries have limited his ability to be a high-level college baseball pitcher. He had to go through a rehab process when other prospects were just able to pitch, but his talent and status as a lefty is still enough to put him high on plenty of draft boards.

For proof on just how valuable left-handed pitching is, look no further than baseball betting game odds at bet365. Teams who are normally favorites become heavy favorites when they have a lefty slated to start, and teams who are normally underdogs become favorites when left-handers with a high level of talent are designated to start. If Thompson can pitch well post-injury, he should be drafted early in 2019.

Will Holland - Auburn

Shortstop is such a valuable position on any baseball team, to where being a good one will put you high on a ton of draft boards. Will Holland has a little of what makes a great old-school and new-school shortstop, making him a player with a lot of potential. But more important than the potential of Holland, is the fact that he is a player with a low ceiling.

Holland showed a marked improvement from his first season as a Tiger to his second. The shortstop hit .313 in his sophomore campaign, giving opposing pitchers headaches en route to putting the talent evaluators in the sport on notice. He also upped his home run tally, going from three in 2017 to 12 in 2018, showing that he is working on his strength and his ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark.

Defensively, Holland has a way to go after posting a .952 fielding percentage in 2018. But if he can become more reliable with his glove as he continues to get better offensively, he could be one of the first names that Major League Baseball teams think of when they think of shortstop prospects. And he could be one of the SEC's top prospects heading into 2019.
