SEC Football Week 3 Review

Week 3 in the SEC saw a few surprises, but overall, not too much we didn't not see coming. LSU looked even better, Tennessee looked worse, and Auburn finally knows what it feels like to lose after almost two years of perfection.

Let's get to the week that was in the SEC:

LSU 19 - Mississippi State 6

Pretty much what we expected as the Bengal Tigers defense was so dominate, it held the SEC's leading ground attack to 52 yards in winning their 12th straight in the series. The issue was still in doubt into the Fourth Quarter as LSU led only 9-6, but seeing the way LSU's defense was, the Bulldogs could not have scored a touchdown if they were still playing right now.

Vanderbilt 30 - Ole Miss 7

What in the name of Admiral Vanderbilt is going on here? The "Doores are 3-0? They are now officially the best team in the state of Tennessee (All right, quit giggling like school girls after that line).

Vandy led 30-0 until Ole Miss avoided the shutout with 2:15 left on a TD pass from Zack Stoudt to Donte Moncrief.

At times, Ole Miss looked more interested in the trip home, rather than the game. Three different offensive linemen had a false-start. One was critical as it halted a drive on fourth-and-1 at the Vandy 40. The Rebels then had to use a timeout with only 10 men on the field before punting.

"Hey, Mo...Are we going on two or three this time?"

Clemson 38 - Auburn 24

So much for the SEC slapping around little brother ACC as Clemson got their revenge after last year's loss to the Tigers in a dominating 14-point victory. In fact, Clemson looked more like the SEC team, and SEC commissioner, Mike Slive was so impressed, he was seen in the Clemson locker room asking if they would be interested in joining the conference. Heck, everyone else is doing it, so why not?

Clemson has hosted the previous year's national champion three times since 1936 and has won all three matchups (Auburn-2010, Georgia Tech-1991 and Georgia-1981).

SEC Game of the Week

Florida 33 - Tennessee 23

Sorry to say, this use to be the SEC Game of the Week every year, but now it is just the SEC Game for the Weak as the Gators pounded the Vols for the seventh straight year.

Florida was faster, had more playmakers, and looked more tenacious on defense as they stopped the Vols high powered passing attack. Chris Rainey was Mr. Everything for the Gators as he had 233 yards of offense including an 83 yard TD reception, had over 100 yards in receiving and rushing, blocked a punt, and even taught the locker room yoga class so he could get "Mr. Calm" Will Muschamp to relax before he pulled an Urban on the sidelines.

After everyone gushed over Tyler Bray the first two week of the year, I say the lad is overrated, especially after seeing him go up against an SEC defense. He was also seen throwing a tantrum on the sidelines during the first half when nothing was going right on offense. He even argued with and dismissed an assistant coach who was trying to work with him to get the issues corrected. I wrote in my SEC Preview that I was not sure he was mature enough to handle the job. The jury is still out, but I think I know what the verdict might be.

I also wrote over the summer that the Vols could go winless in the SEC, which everyone thought Coach Scooter was joking about. I even got an angry email from a Vol fan who blasted me for writing the Vols were descending.

Stop sippin' the Kool-Aid because with Justin Hunter lost for the season with a torn ACL, and seeing how this group played on Saturday, that plane might be crashing to Earth very soon.

Well, one down seven to go for the Vols as their quest to pull a Commodore is right on schedule. (Pulling a Commodore is going 0-8 in SEC play).

South Carolina 24 - Navy 21

I told you earlier in the week that USC might have trouble with Navy, and I was right. (The only time this year, I am sure, but I got it on the record). I know Steve Spurrier thanked the football Gods he has Marcus Lattimore on his sideline. The super soph rushed for 246 yards, more than Heisman Trophy winning RB George Rogers ever rushed for, and was the difference in the game.

"Saucy" Stephanie from Atlanta wrote in to say, "The Gamecocks shouldn't have had to work that damn hard for that win, but it was a win, nonetheless. Can someone remind me again when graduation day is at Carolina? Adios, Garcia :)"

Needless to say, I am sure "The Saucy One" had a few beverages before writing in to SECSportsfan.com, but keep in mind Carolina fans, nobody wants to schedule Navy because of their offense that is tough to prepare for, no matter who you are.

The "Cocks are the best team in the SEC East, and the division title goes through Columbia right now.

Louisville 24 - Kentucky 17

The Ben Folds Five must have been the halftime entertainment on this Saturday as their hit, "The Battle For Who Could Care Less" must have been sung throughout Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.

You have to give it to Charlie Strong and the Cardinals as they ended a four game losing streak to the Cats. In doing so, they held Kentucky to 35 yards rushing.

Did Kentucky adopt the Woody Hayes offense of three yards and a cloud of dust? In fact, the longest run Big Blue had all night was from the locker room to the sideline to start the game.

Cupcake Central

Arkansas 38 - Troy 28

The Hogs had a fight on their hands as those tricky Trojans from Troy gave them everything they wanted before running out of gas in the fourth quarter. Troy rolled up 457 yards of offense. Hmm, if that's the case, how many might Bama roll up this week? Stay tuned...

Alabama 41 - North Texas 0

Bama coasted into their showdown with Arkansas on Saturday with a 41point victory over outmanned North Texas. The fun stat of the game was North Texas' total offense was 169 yards and no points, while Trent Richardson rushed for 167 and three TD's. I guess the Mean Green were a little lean and unseen in the offensive department.

Georgia 59 - Coastal Carolina 0

Pretty much as we expected as UGA got everything rolling their way. I think the Dawgs made the right choice in ordering a Coastal instead of a South from the Carolina menu this week, huh?
