There is no doubt that the modern game of American Football is an industry that involves huge amounts of money. Whether it is the amount wagered by people betting online on NFL in New Jersey where it is legal to do so, or the money that people spend on NFL merchandise, the game is in something of a golden era financially. This can also be seen directly in the total revenue that the official NFL league generates each year.
To put this into perspective, it has been reported that the NFL generated $16 billion in revenue last season! When you look back to 2017 when this figure was around $8 billion, it is clear evidence of rising revenues within the game that ramp up each year. Going back to 2008, the total revenue generated was just over $7.5 billion which again shows the increasing amount of money coming into the game year on year.
This rising trend in overall revenue is set to continue next season. Indeed, many expect the amount generated to rise a lot, thereby providing the league with more resources to divide out to teams the following season. The recent $30 million deal with Caesars Entertainment will certainly help in this regard as well as it being the centenary NFL season. This should mean even more attention and awareness of football with the general public that will then push up ticket and merchandise sales.
But what else is at play with the yearly rising revenues around football? What is behind the ever-increasing revenues we are seeing?
At one point in its history, American football was only marketed in and popular in America. For the rest of the world, it was something of an oddity or enigma. However, recent expansion plans by the league owners have helped to change that. Now, American Football is popular in a whole host of other countries and this helps it to generate more cash. With more TV rights to sell and more NFL merchandise sold around the world, the league now has a much larger audience to make money from.
The NFL makes a lot of money from companies paying them to sponsor the league. These sponsorship deals tend to go up each year with businesses paying more and more to do so. Naturally, this puts more money into the league’s coffers and is a major reason behind revenues rising each year. As the years roll on, expect these deals to continue to net some serious amounts of cash for the NFL. Of course, there are also TV rights to factor in which also cost more each year and put ever-increasing amounts into the NFL’s bank account.
Another reason for the expected revenue rise moving forward is the new ways in which money could be made by the NFL. Legal betting on sporting events is one of the major factors and many think that the NFL could partner with sports betting companies in the future to make billions. As more US states pass legislation to legalize betting on sports then it could be a source of new revenue for the league to take advantage of. Already this has been seen to some extent in the Caesars Entertainment deal but there is even more potential for new markets like this to be exploited.
As well as TV deals and sponsorship, football makes money from attracting fans into the game and selling tickets or team merchandize to them. This is true whether in the core American sector or to the global football fans around the world. The way the sport is covered in the media plays a big part in this as it makes it so exciting to get involved with. The way the sport is set-up itself also helps with lots of thrills, spills, and drama. All this combines to make it something that people want to watch and want to follow.
With the new NFL season all set to get going in early September 2019, all the signs are that it will be a real cracker. With the February Superbowl showdown in Miami this year, all fans will be eagerly watching to see who makes it. It is just this kind of attention and drama that looks set to make the NFL revenue soar next year. With new markets to tap into, new fans to capture globally and ever-increasing sponsorship deals, it seems certain that last year’s $16 billion revenue will be surpassed.
