Georgia's Two Heisman Trophy Winners

The Georgia Bulldogs have two Heisman winners in their football program. Who are they? Well there names are Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker. Herschel Walker and Frank Sinkwich won the Heisman 40 years apart. Frank Sinkwich won the Heisman in 1942 and Herschel Walker won it in 1982. Both times, Georgia won the SEC Championship.


Frank Sinkwich played for Georgia 1940-1942. He was a fast running back for his time. He ran a 9.8 second 100 yard dash. In 1942, his final season at Georgia, Sinkwich scored 16 touchdowns and 96 total points. He averaged 7.9 yards per carry in 1942.


Frank Sinkwich was All-American in all three seasons at Georgia, 1940-1942. In 1941, he completed 14 touchdown passes in one season. He also has 60 touchdowns during his career at Georgia. Sinkwich rushed for 2,271 yards, passed for 2,331 yards. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame and his number is retired at the University of Georgia. The Georgia Bulldogs won the SEC Conference by going 11-1 on the season. Georgia beat UCLA in the Rose Bowl 9-0 on 1/1/43. In 1941, the Bulldogs went 9-1-1, that year they played TCU in the Orange Bowl. Georgia beat TCU 40-26 on 1/1/42.


Frank Sinkwich beat out quarterback Paul Governali of Columbia University. Frank Sinkwich was drafted number 1 by the Detroit Lions in 1943. He played 2 seasons at Detroit, and then went to the AAFC to play for NY Yankees football for 2 seasons. He finished his pro football career at Baltimore in 1947. He didn't play much in the NFL, but Sinkwich won the MVP in 1944. In his NFL career, he had 7 rushing touchdowns, rushed for 1,090 yards. He passed for 11,913 yards with 19 passing touchdowns.


Frank Sinkwich died in Athens, Ga on October 22, 1990 due to a serious illness.

Herschel Walker was the second Heisman winner at Georgia. Herschel Walker won the Heisman in 1982, and then he went to the USFL. Just like Frank Sinkwich's Bulldogs, Georgia won the SEC Championship in Herschel Walker's Heisman season. In 1980, Georgia Bulldogs won the National Championship by beating Notre Dame 17-10. Herschel Walker played a vital part on the team that year. He scored 15 rushing touchdowns that year. He ran for 1,616 rushing yards that year. He was a fast and explosive running back. Most defenses couldn't contain him. In 1981, Georgia won the SEC Championship again. 1981 season was Herschel Walker's best season at Georgia. He scored 18 rushing touchdowns and had 2 reception touchdowns. He rushed for 1,891 yards.


In 1982, his final year at Georgia and his Heisman season, Herschel Walker again helped the Bulldogs win the SEC Championship. He ran for 1,752 yards, with 16 rushing touchdowns, and 1 reception touchdown. Georgia lost in the Sugar Bowl to Penn State following the 1982 season. Georgia would've been National Champions if they had beaten Penn State. Herschel Walker had a monster career at Georgia. He rushed for 8,225 yards career. He had 61 career rushing touchdowns, and had 21 receiving touchdowns.


Herschel Walker won the Heisman in December of 1982 as a junior. He decided to go pro after the 1982 season. He joined the USFL in 1983. He played for NJ Generals from 1983-1985. He later joined the NFL in 1986. His first NFL team was the Dallas Cowboys. He played for Dallas from 1986-1989. He then went to Minnesota during the 1989 season. He played for the Vikings from 1989-1991. In 1992, Herschel Walker signed to Philadelphia Eagles. He played for the Eagles from 1992-1994. In 1995, Herschel Walker played for the NY Giants for one season. Herschel Walker finished his NFL career at Dallas. He played for the Cowboys for the second time around. He played for the Cowboys in 1996 and 1997 seasons. He then retired from football. Herschel Walker had a good NFL career. He scored 61 rushing touchdowns, rushed for 8,225 yards career. He played 187 games, started 138 games.

Herschel Walker was inducted to the College football Hall of Fame in 1999. His number is retired at Georgia. Herschel Walker and Frank Sinkwich are the only two players at Georgia that won the Heisman Trophy. 40 years apart, can you believe that? Maybe the next Heisman winner at Georgia will win one in 2022? That would be 40 years after Herschel Walker won his trophy.
