Most people have the impression that sports players live on the golf course, basketball court or baseball field night and day to pursue their craft at the fullest. While that may be true to a large extent, players also pursue lives outside of their athlete worlds and partake in activities such as gaming, hunting, fishing and even gambling.
It seems the more successful an athlete is both in terms of the intensity they bring to the game and the income they make, the more they are likely to pursue other high-risk endeavors that excite them on some sort of new level.
When you are a sports player making millions and constantly in front of cameras, arenas full of people and other high intense situations, the bar for stimulating a sports player's senses raises quite high. It is no surprise then athletes tend to take up gambling as a means of testing high stakes rewards under uncertainty.
We have seen this from many sports players who like to play at casino hubs both online and offline. For example, golfer John Daly supposedly wagered as much as $1 million in a single blackjack game while in Vegas and reportedly practices online with lower wagers at various real money sites while touring for golf. Daly is very open about his addiction to gambling and his fond for blackjack, much like he is open about being addicted to junk food.
Charles Barkley is also another gambling enthusiast who primarily plays slots and poker. He has been known to play high stakes blackjack between basketball tournaments back when he was in his prime and since retirement has continued to attend gambling halls on a frequent basis.
Michael Jordan meanwhile is said to play it all and reportedly frequents high-roller slot machines in the VIP sections of casinos where he throws down as much as $10,000 a spin. Most of this takes place in Atlantic City, Vegas and even when vacationing in places like Australia, of which are known for their slots otherwise known as pokies culture. Jordan however still reportedly prefers blackjack over all games and frequently attends blackjack tournaments both offline and online at safe sites.
Tiger Woods is also notorious for gambling and the addiction seems to have only worsened since his marriage ended. The golf player admitted he is seeking therapy for dealing with various issues including his gambling problem.
