CLINT CASTLEBERRY-RB-GT-1942. He played only one year due to the war but led GT to 9-2 record with upset wins over powerhouses Navy and Notre Dame. A knee injury in the 10th game against Florida hampered his play in that game and the final game against UGA. His final game was a close Cotton Bowl loss (14-7) against Texas. Called the most dangerous runner in America by one scout; the smallish (5-9,155#) dynamo runner finished 3rd in the Heisman voting (highest finish for a freshman at that time).
Although a hero on the gridiron Clint is BEST remembered as a WW11 hero who gave his life in a plane crash on 11-7-1944. His #19 is the only GT football jersey to be retired.
