Can SEC Win Seven Straight National Championships?

Six years in a row that a SEC school won a National Championship. That’s incredible! Two of the last three were won by Alabama Crimson Tide. Now the question is what non SEC school can end the streak? I think with the addition of Missouri Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies, it can make the SEC more potent. Missouri Tigers have done very well in the Big 12. Texas A&M have played well in the last few years as well.

In the SEC media, the writers are predicting Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Auburn to have a good season. LSU was also in the running, but recently they had a personal player problem. Tyrann Mathieu “Honey Badger” was kicked off the team this past week. He failed a drug test again; Coach Les Miles decided to let him go.

The one team that has a chance to make it 7 in row is, Georgia Bulldogs. I will have to be bias in this article, but I hope Georgia can make it 7 in a row for the SEC. Georgia Bulldogs haven’t won a National Championship in 32 years, which was in 1980. Aaron Murray, the starting quarterback will be more experienced, the offensive line will be quicker, and the running game is going to be explosive. Georgia Bulldogs did lose a good running back name Isaiah Crowell back in June. He was kicked off the team after being arrested with marijuana and gun possession in the car that he drove. There are going to be two freshman running backs this year, Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. They will have to step up in the running game. Senior Richard Samuel will be back, sophomore Brandon Horton will also be in the mix. Georgia Bulldogs have had some shots at competing for the National Championships during the Mark Richt era.

Georgia Bulldogs start the season at home versus Buffalo on Sept 1. They should run all over Buffalo Bulls. Then the following week, the Bulldogs will travel to Columbia, MO to face the Missouri Tigers. The Bulldogs will get tested by the Missouri Tigers. It’s a make or break for the Bulldogs and it won’t be easy. If Georgia beats Missouri, then they have a good shot for the National Championship.

Alabama Crimson Tide, who won the BCS National Championship last season, will try to do it again. This season, the Crimson Tide will play at Tennessee; they play at Arkansas, and play at LSU. This season will be more of a test for Alabama. Winning on the road is never easy for a SEC team. In fact, Alabama faces Michigan on September 1 in Ann Arbor. Michigan is a team that has a chance to break the streak also. If Alabama loses to Michigan, their chances will slimmer real down. Alabama has to beat Michigan if they want to win the BCS again. Alabama will have quarterback AJ McCarron, also they will have wide receiver Nick Williams. The loss of running back Trent Richardson will hurt the most on offense. Alabama will have some new freshman running backs.

Another team that is capable of winning a championship is Auburn Tigers. Yes, Auburn didn’t exactly have what you call a satisfied season last year. They did miss having Cam Newton at quarterback, but they still got guys that can flat out and run. After finishing an 8-5 season, the Auburn Tigers got a quarterback that can throw. Auburn Tigers won’t have Michael Dyer at running back. They do have Emory Blake at wide receiver. Emory Blake had 36 receptions, 613 reception yards, and 5 touchdowns. With a new quarterback in place, Auburn will have Clint Moseley. Clint Moseley was injured part of last season. Anthony Morgan who is a senior will be one of the running backs for Auburn this year. Coach Gene Chizik knows how to win, but without Michael Dyer who transferred to Arkansas State, they will have to readjust on offense big time. Auburn has Georgia and Alabama at home this year. They start the season in Death Valley facing the Clemson Tigers. If they beat Clemson, then Auburn has the confidence that they can beat anybody on any given Saturday.

LSU Tigers ranked number 1 right now. LSU Tigers will have to play without Tyrann Mathieu. After failing a drug test again, he was booted from the team. LSU will have a new quarterback this year. Zach Mettenberger, who was a redshirt quarterback at Georgia a few years ago. Zach will have running back Michael Ford and wide receiver Rueben Handle. Michael Ford last season had 756 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns. He will be with running back Spencer Ware. Spencer Ware had 9 touchdowns last year, 8 rushing and 1 receiving. He’s a duel threat on offense. Zach Mettenberger has an arm, he throws like a cannon. He will be dangerous and don’t expect LSU to slow down that much without Tyrann Mathieu. Les Miles will be trying to win another BCS National Championship with the Tigers. He has won 1 and almost had one last year. LSU Tigers have won 2 SEC Championships under Les Miles. Anything can happen in Baton Rouge this year. LSU has Alabama and they have non conference Washington Huskies at home.

Florida Gators are a team that is on a rise. Last year Florida didn’t even have a winning conference record. Florida barely had a winning season overall last year at 7-6. Things will be more different under second year coach Will Muschamp. Florida won’t have John Brantley at quarterback this year. Right now the quarterback situation is either going be Chandler Carr or Jacoby Brissett. Whoever the quarterback might be, they will have Jeff Demps at running back. Last season Jeff Demps had 569 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns. Wide Receiver Andre Debose had 432 reception yards with 4 touchdown receptions. He will be a vital part on the offense this year. Florida Gators have LSU at home and they have Tennessee on the road. This season the Gators play the Gamecocks in Gainesville. If Florida wins the first three games of the year, then they could have a shot for the BCS Championship.

This season will have some uncertainty in the SEC and all of college football. There are some teams across the country that can break the streak of 6 straight SEC teams winning the National Championship. SEC is such a powerful football conference that no one can top what they have done in the last 7 years. Big Ten has some teams that could win several National Championships year in and year out. We will see what happens this year. It’s going to be an exciting season in SEC football and in college football.
