Bulldog Fan -- Charlie Trippi -- best Georgia Bulldog Ever

I truly believe that Herschel is the best running back in Georgia Bulldog History. But, the best Georgia Football Player to ever play at Georgia was Charlie Trippi. He was the All-Around, All-American who could do it all.

He ran, tackled, blocked, and kicked. He played Offense and Defense, and it took more athletic ability to do both. And, I am not so sure that Frank Sinkwich was not the number 2 player. Then I would rank Hershel at number 3.

Trippi was best all round player and in Pro football hall of fame. Would rank Walker ahead of Sinkwich because he was a good receiver and k.o. returner in Pros. Dooley never fully utilized his ability to catch passes or return kickoffs. Defensive ability will have to remain a question mark. Trippi was regarded by Bobby Dodd as the best safetyman he ever saw! Butts says he never saw him miss an open field tackle.
High praise from a man who rarely gave it!

Agree that Trippi the greatest

Just read an AP story about Trippi and the football Cardinals on this eve of the Super Bowl. The story by Charles Odum said: "Trippi was a do-it-all running back, quarterback, safety, punter and return specialist, and he so excelled at every position that Jim Thorpe once proclaimed him to be the greatest player he had seen." My high school coach in the 1950s said the same thing -- the "best player he'd ever seen." (Our coach was Owen Goodnight, who played pro ball for the Rams and played college ball with the great Clyde "Bulldog" Turner at Hardin-Simmons University in the late 1930s.) I got to see Trippi play in a pre-season game in San Antonio in the late 1940s and agree with what Thorpe and my coach said.

My late Father was an ETO veteran from the Army Air Corps.

Since he had been a talented high school player in Philadelphia he was "drafted" once again to play end (both ways) on his unit's football team.

One of his teamates was Charlie Trippi who Dad always referred to as a classy guy who could really carry the football. everyone knew he was a star however he carried himself in a very normal fashion - they were all soldiers also.

Charlie Trippi The Greatest

I played baseball on three championship teams (1953-1955). Charlie is not only the greatest football player he is the greatest athlete. not only was he an All-American Football player he also was an All-American baseball player in 1947. He still owns the batting average record at Georgia(.464).He played for the Atlanta Crackers in 1947 and led the Southern ASSN. in hitting. THE 1947 SUGAR Bowl which Georgia won 20-10 Charlie played the entire game. As a freshman he was the hero of the 1942 Rose Bowl and is still on the all Rose Bowl team.
