Best SEC Baseball Rivalry
When you think of Southeastern (SEC) sports rivalries, you think of football (see Best All-Time SEC Football Rivalry Games). Of course, the rivalries on the football field often spill over into other sports - including baseball.
But, there are certainly great rivalries that are unique to SEC baseball as well. Picking the best SEC baseball rivalry is tough because there are several great choices.
Georgia and Georgia Tech have a heated baseball rivalry. Of course Georgia Tech is not in the SEC, but it used to be. Their annual intra-state battle attracts some of the biggest crowds in all of college baseball.
Of course, any game between LSU, Alabama, and/or Mississippi State is a rivalry game because of their competition for Best All-Time SEC Baseball Program. Each of the programs has such a proud history, that games between them have special importance.
But, for the top SEC baseball rivalry, you have to look at Ole Miss vs Mississippi State.
The Rebels and Bulldogs just can't seem to get the record books straight because of the contention between the two schools. For instance, when you take a look at the Mississippi State records, they claim to lead the series 231-186-5. But, Ole Miss records show they only trail Mississippi State 224-192-5. It's curious to see whose keeping score because, as recently as 1978, Ole Miss partisans claimed to actually lead the series by about six games.
Overall, Mississippi State has much more to brag about (as far as college baseball anyway). Since 1978, the Bulldogs earned four SEC Baseball Championships. Old Miss has yet to win any. Since 1978, Mississippi State has made seven appearances in the College World Series. Again, Ole Miss has stayed home each year. Since 1978, MSU brought home five SEC Tournament Championships; Ole Miss only one.
But, no matter. The rivalry is hottest when the two teams meet each other on the field.
And, when you look at that record -- OLE MISS WINS!! In the last 18 meetings between the Rebels and the Bulldogs; the Ole Miss Rebels have 13 wins.
So, yes, Ole Miss vs Mississippi State is the best SEC baseball rivalry.
