Best All-Time SEC Volleyball Player
Volleyball is a sport that is steeped in tradition in the Southeastern Conference, and it really is difficult to pinpoint who exactly was the best volleyball player in SEC history.
However, if accomplishment on and off the SEC volleyball court is the criteria by which we are measuring greatness, then Angie McGinnis certainly merits a place in the discussion of greatest SEC volleyball player.
From an early age, Angie McGinnis's athletic prowess and her love for competition was evident. It was soon apparent that her physical gifts were a perfect fit for the sport of volleyball, which she began playing while she was growing up in Michigan.
During her high school years, she eventually developed into one of the nation's finest high school Volleyballers. In 2001, she was named to the all-league first team, the all-county first team, and the all-state second team. In 2002, she was named to the all-state first team, all-county first team, all-league first team and league MVP. And in 2003, she was named to the all-state first team. She was named Michigan Gatorade Player of the year in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, Angie was named Michigan's "Miss Volleyball."
Following her prep school career, Angie McGinnis, a hot recruiting commodity on the volleyball circuit, decided to attend the University of Florida, where she was a member of the Volleyball squad from the years 2004-2007, a period during which Lady Gators volleyball truly excelled.
She immediately made an impact with the squad, being named SEC Freshman of the Year in her first season at UF. She also earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team and was named to the Second-Team All-SEC.
In her sophomore season, in 2005, her achievements were even more impressive in nature. She set a school record for a setter by amassing a hitting percentage of .394. She also compiled an assist average of 13.46, 3rd best in school history, and an assist total of 1,575, 5th best in school history. She was named to the AVCS All-American Third Team and was a First Team All-SEC selection.
Entering her junior season at UF, McGinnis's accomplishments would have already made her one of the finest players to ever play for the Lady Gators, if not the entire SEC, but McGinnis was just getting started. In her junior season, in 2006, McGinnis became the first setter in SEC history to be named Conference Player of the Year. During this season, she began shattering UF records one by one, breaking 14 single season and career records during this season. She was named to the AVCA All American First-Team, was named SEC Player of the Year, and was SEC All-First Team. She became the fastest player in UF history (and the third fastest all time) to reach 4,000 career assists.
Then, in McGinnis' senior season, she continued to dominate the league. She earned her second consecutive SEC Conference Player of the Year title that season. Along the way, she continued to shatter records, setting a school record with a 17.49 kills per game average, over .55 above the previous school record. She completed her collegiate career at UF with a total of 5,784 assists, far and away the most in school history.
So, now you surely understand why we say Angie McGinnis was the best all-time SEC volleyball player. No doubt!
