A balanced article on this debate can be found in the Columbus Dispatch by Ken Gordon, Sunday Dec. 16, 07 titled Mightier? Maybe not/ SEC dominance against the Big 10 isn't clear cut.

Has some good stats and commentary from Peter Wolfe, a UCLA researcher whose ratings are used by the BCS. He notes things change quickly, in 2005 the Segarin ratings (another BCS computer system) had the Big 10 conference rated no. 1, and the SEC no. 5.
And head to head, the conferences are 13 - 13 in the Bowl games since 1997, so what's all the argument?

We Need a Consistent SEC vs Big Ten Criteria
by Jon Anderson
(Kansas City)
UNBELIEVABLE! SEC fans are amazingly inconsistent. The criteria for why the SEC is better than the Big Ten continually changes.

Two weeks ago the criteria was that the SEC's speed is so great and the Big Ten is no match for the SEC. However, Michigan's lightening fast defense rallied against Tim Tebow and the Florida offense. Now SEC fans have to change the criteria once again.
Now it’s who has the best bowl record. Yet, when the Big Ten wins their bowl games SEC fans say, "well you didn't play anybody." Well, SEC, you didn't play anybody either."
Here's an oldie but goody. Who is the most successful quarterback in the NFL? Ooops, we can't use that one anymore.
SEC Fans: Be consistent and stop playing situational ethics with the facts.
Let's establish a criteria for determining the best conference and stick with it.
