* The Arkansas and Georgia Cotton Bowl matchup on January 1, 1976 was one of the more memorable games in Cotton Bowl history. It was the famous (or infamous for Georgia fans) ?shoestring game.? Georgia?s so-called Junkyard Dogs were solid favorites against the Hogs, and the game turned on a Georgia silk purse that turned out to be a pig?s ear. Leading 10-3 with about 50 seconds to go in the 1st half, coach Vince Dooley?s Bulldogs reached into their sack of tricks and joke turned out to be on them.

It was the old shoestring play. With the ball on the Georgia 22-yard line, Bulldog QB Ray Goff (who would later be the head coach at Georgia from 1989-95 compiling a 46-34-1 record) sauntered back to the line of scrimmage, where his offensive line had casually lined up following a 2-yard keeper by Goff. Kneeling as if to tie his shoe lace, Goff quickly reached out and flicked the ball off the ground, a legal maneuver as long as it?s in one motion, in the general direction of flanker Gene Washington, who was to Goff?s right. Washington, who had scored on a similar play during the 1975 regular season season against Vanderbilt, never got the handle and Arkansas LB Hal McAfee recovered the ball at the 13.

Georgia lost the momentum and the game on that one ill-advised play. On the Hog?s first play following the fumble, QB Scott Bull flipped a short pass to all-SWC running back Ike Forte who was tackled at the 1. Forte then scored on run around left end. Steve Little?s PAT made the score 10-10 at the half, and a fired up Razorback team dominated the second half to win going away, 31-10.
