All Time SEC Basketball Team

The SEC has had some great players in the history of the conference. With so many great players, it is hard to make an All-Time SEC team.

When I was asked to do this, I wanted to do two things. The first was to make sure that every SEC team had a player on this squad. Second, I wanted to build it as a true team. So I have picked 15 players total, a starting line up and each position with two back ups. This is what I came up with.

Starting Lineup

Center: Shaquille O'Neal (LSU, 1989-1992)

Before he was ripping down backboards in the NBA, Shaquille O'Neal was a dominating force in the SEC. He was a two time SEC player of the year and First Team All-American in 1991 and 1992. He was also a First Team All-SEC in 1990, 1991, and 1992. He lead the SEC in blocks and rebounding in all three of his seasons at LSU.

Power Forward: Charles Barkley (Auburn, 1981-1984)

Charles Barkley may be undersized at 6'-6" to play power forward, "The Round Mound of Rebound" will no doubt make his presence known on this squad. The 1984 SEC Player of the Year was also a three time All-SEC team member and was a Second Team All American selection. He lead the SEC in rebounding all three season he played for the Tigers.

Small Forward: Dominique Wilkins (Georgia, 1979-1982)

The 1981 SEC Player of the Year is one of the most exciting players to ever play in the SEC. He was also an All-SEC First team selection and an All-American Second Team selection in 1981 and 1982. He was a scoring machine during his time at Georgia averaging 21 points a game. He currently ranks fourth all time on the Georgia scoring list with 1,668 in three seasons.

Shooting Guard: Rex Chapman (Kentucky, 1986-1988)

While he might have only played two seasons at Kentucky, he scored 1,073 points. He was an All-SEC Team selection in 1987 and 1988. He was selected third team All-American in 1988 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. For his career he averaged 17.6 points, shot 47.5% from the field, and 40% from the three point line.

Point Guard: Pete Maravich (LSU, 1966-1970)

"Pistol" Pete Maravich may be the best basketball player in the history of the SEC and the NCAA. He is the all-time NCAA scoring leader with 3,667 points. He also holds the all-time single season scoring average at 44.5 points a game. For his career at LSU he averaged 44.2 points a game. He was a unanimous first team All-SEC and All-American in 1968, 1969, and 1970. It might be better to have him at the shooting guard, but "Pistol" Pete was also a great ball handler and averaged 5 assists during his time at LSU.

Centers

Dan Issel (Kentucky, 1966-1970)

The all time leading scorer in the history of Kentucky basketball. In his time playing varsity basketball for coach Adolph Rupp from the 1967-68 to 1969-70 season, Issell scored 2,138 points. He averaged 25.8 points, shooting 51.9% from the floor. He was a Second Team All-American in 1969 and First Team All-American in 1970.

Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi St, 2006-2010)

If you want a back-up center to be a presence in the middle, then Jarvis Varnado fits the build perfectly. At 6'9'' and with a 7'4'' wingspan, you cannot easily get by him. His is the all time NCAA shot blocker with 564 blocked shots. He was a two time All-SEC selection in 2009 and 2010. He was also a two time SEC defensive player of the year in 2009 and 2010.

Power Forwards

Corliss Williamson (Arkansas, 1992-1995)

He was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 1994 NCAA Tournament leading the Razorbacks to the only NCAA Basketball title in the program's history. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 1993. He was also All-SEC First team from 1993 to 1995. In 1994 and 1995 he was named SEC Player of the Year and Second Team All-American. He is currently eighth on the Arkansas scoring list with 1,728 points.

Udonis Haslem (Florida, 1998-2002)

A four year starter for the Florida Gators, Haslem really was solid contributor for coach Billy Donovan. He was a member of Donovan's first Gator squad to reach the NCAA Championship in 2000. The third all-time leading scorer in the history of Florida basketball with 1,781 points. He is also 10th all-time in rebounds with 831 rebounds.

Small Forwards

Reggie King (Alabama, 1975-1979 )

Reggie King is the all-time laeading scorer in the history of the Alabama basketball progam with 2,168 points. He also is second all time in rebounding with 1,279. He was named to the 1976 All-American Freshmen team, He was also named All-SEC First Team in 1977, 1978, and 1979 and was the United Press International SEC Player of the Year in 1978 and 1979. He was selected to the All-American Second Team in 1978 and 1979.

Shan Foster (Vanderbilt, 2004-2008)

Shan Foster was one of the deadliest shooters in the SEC during his time at Vanderbilt. Started from the time he arrived in Nashiville. In 2005 he was named to the All-SEC Freshmen team. By the time his college career was over, he was the Commodores all-time leading scorer with 2,011 points. He was named the 2008 SEC Player of the Year and was also selected to the All-American Second Team.

Shooting Guards

Allan Houston (Tennessee, 1989-1993)

A four year starter at Tennessee, Allan Houston is one of the all time great shooting guards in the history of the SEC. He is the Volunteers all-time leading scorer with 2,801 points, that ranks second in the history of the SEC. He also holds the single season scoring record with 806 points. His 42 % from three is also tops in Volunteer history. He was named to the 1990 All-SEC Freshman team. He was an All-SEC First Team selection in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993. He was also a Second Team All-American in 1992 and 1993.

Elston Turner (Mississippi, 1977-1981)

Elston Turner was a versatile forward/guard for the Ole Miss Rebels. In his senior season he lead the Rebels to their first NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the 1981 SEC Tournament. He ranks fourth all time in Ole Miss scoring with 1,805 points. His 828 rebounds ranks second all time for the Rebels. He was selected to the All-SEC Third Team in 1980 and First Team All-SEC in 1981.

Point Guards

B.J. McKie (South Carolina, 1995-1999)

B.J. McKie lead South Carolina to the 1997 regular season championship with a 15-1 record. He was selected to the SEC All-Freshman team in 1996 and was the AP SEC Rookie of the Year. He was a three time selection to the All-SEC First Team in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He is the all time scoring leader in South Carolina history with 2,119 points. His 382 assists is good for ninth all time at South Carolina.

Devan Downey (South Carolina, 2007-2010)

Devan Downey continued the string of great point guards at South Carolina. He ranks fourth all-time in scoring with 1,901 points. He also ranks first all-time in steals with 277 and is eighth all-time in assists with 420. He was an All-SEC First Team Selection in 2008, 2009, and 2010. He was also on the SEC All-Defensive team in 2009 and 2010. He was a honorable mention to the All-American team in 2009 and 2010.
